This is my first time using a forum so I hope you will all bare with me. I am having a hard time finding info on my 1977 Mav. It has a 250/6 cyl in it. I just bought it and the valve train has a chatter in it. I changed to 15W30 and it didn't help. I tried to check the timing but the gage next to the harmonic balancer is rusted over and none of the numbers are there. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
Welcome to the forum from Northeastern Illinois. U might take the valve cover off and take a look to see if anything might be the cause of the clatter. There a few folks on here that sell a parts; u might want to place an add in the wanted section for the timing piece. I wud install an oil pressure gauge as a priority to monitor the op.
Welcome to the board. Like Mojo said, look and see if anything needs to be tightened. Also some times an exhaust leak will sound like a noisy lifter.
Thanks for the replies. I pulled the valve cover and hoped to see adjustable rocker arms but that was pipe dream. Didn't find any thing loose. Check the exhaust system over and didn't find any leaks. Looks like I may install an oil pressure gauge next.
Tom if you are high in the mileage,250,000 or more it could be the lifters worn and the rocker assembly . Check them for heavy wear.:16suspect
Still battling the valve train noise, can't get past the paper work that says the engine was overhauled by Jasper and can't bring myself to pull the head to look at the lifters...yet.
You could try lucas oil additive for engine noise. The lucas really works. Is the harmonic balancer ,the crankshaft balancer in front, installed by Jasper ,and painted by them? Let us know.
Welcome to the forum from West Virginia. To check the lifters, first take the valve cover off. Turn the engine over by hand while checking the push rods for to much play. They should be snug with a little drag. not tight. If this engine was rebuilt by jasper, Call them. How long ago?
I bought the car late last year, The guy I bought it from is a Mopar farmer (field full of Mopars). He gave me all the repair paper work that he got when he bought it from an estate sale. The paper work came from a local Transmission shop. On that invoice it states that they removed the engine and sent it to Jasper back in 2008. After the car was sold at the estate sate it sat for a year and a half to two years. The paint on the engine is flaking off (showing the original blue), which leads me to believe it wasn't do by Jasper ( I would think they would have stripped it down. I pulled the valve cover and felt the push rods. I could rotate them but couldn't move them vertically.
also tried Lucas, didn't work. After sitting so long I might just go look at the timing chain and gears.
