Among them was my 45-year-old Eelco flip open gas cap that hasn't been produced since the late 60's. They guy was gonna spray it with powder coat chrome. I've seen two of them come up on ebay in the past year, one went for just over $100, the other for $150, and they weren't that nice.

The cap is made from pot metal. The guy decided to stick it in a cleaning oven at over 800* F. Pot metal melts at around 700* F. I coulda $h1t...

OUCH!!! Powdercoat doesn't need to be that hot, does it? I thought 400 was about the top end temp for powdercoating???

I guess that is the "cleaning oven" and not the oven to cook the powder?

wow are they going to replace it?
if they start to give any lip go buy another one and go back with the bill and tell them remember that thing you screwed up for me? well heres how much it cost me to replace it. tell them nicely to take care of it. say we can work out some trade in more powder coating and theyll surely jump on it (nothing out of there pocket that way). just bring them something they cant screw up. bring them some spindles or control arms

Yeah, the powder coat oven runs at around 375*. The cleaning oven is used to cook off any old grease, grime, paint, etc. Even cleans out the pores of the metal.

I have a '68 Barracuda flip cap coming, gonna try it but keep looking for another Eelco.

He knocked a bunch off my bill, the problem is you hardly see these anymore. It's gonna be tough finding another one, but it's one of the few flip caps that fits the narrow raised portion of the Maverick back panel.

If I understand what you mean by an Eelco flip filler cap, I think you'll find that if you Google "Aston fuel filler cap" in "Images", you'll find a number of similar items are still available. I got mine from an outfit called Merlin Motorsports in the UK. Not cheap though.
    Good luck.

Yeah, Aston caps are similar but taller. I like the roller latch that some of them have but it's so tall I don't think it would look right on the back of my car. The Eelco had a nice, low profile. The cheapest I found an Aston for was $230. I also looked long and hard at this one but would have to do some tail panel mods to make it look right:

Again, I'm not a fan of the high latch.

Hey!.. isn't that some sort of blasphemy or something?

And let's not even get into what the Mopar guys are gonna say to you on cruise nights. But.. we both know they're probably just pissed because it looks better on your rear than it does on top of their trunk. :D

Kinda reminds me of an old story my dad told me. He had a friend that ran a radiator shop off to clean up some flathead parts for him. He hot tanked a 2x2 intake and aluminum heads and did something wrong. They all but disolved away.
