The mav is gone but i'm still here!
I wouldn't get it as a first car, get a 4 cylinder import or domestic instead.

if its a 6cyl its ok for a first car because it will run FOREVER if you keep oil and water in it.

those ol 6 cylinders can stand ALOT of neglect and abuse and still run for 20 years.

someone here said they used there maverick as a daily driver and never changed the oil once in 8 years! and it was still running when he decided it was time to start fixing it up.

my sister had a granada with a 6 cyl in it and she would NEVER check the oil or water unless it was knocking or over heating. put oil or water in and repeat every 6 months or so

perfect car and motor combo for a first car since first cars usually never get taken care of. the only thing I would recommend is a modern distributor so you dont have to deal with points. points can make or break a trip gas mileage and dependability.
a bad set of points can leave you stranded somewhere and I can almost guaranty it will be when you are either in a hurry or have somewhere important to go

modern distributors give you VERY LITTLE trouble if ever
