Is that drop of half the rpm's at the same 55 spd? Was the upgrade frm 4 to 5 spd trans pretty much a bolt in deal? How are u activating the clutch (cable, hydralic or direct?

Just about. The T5Z has an OD ratio .63 and I'm now running a little bit taller tire. I used a CPC adaptor to bolt it to my old Lakewood bellhousing. My 70's tunnel is smaller than later years, had to open up the top of the tunnel and add metal. Had to fabricate a crossmember since the T5's mounting pad is about 1 1/2" farther rearward than ealier trannys. I'm using mechanical clutch linkage.

I am toying with the idea of a T5 swap over the AOD.....

What kind of mechanical linkage? (IE: stock maverick "Z-Bar" or Mustang cable)

For the crossmember did you come up with something along the lines of Franks (71Gold) (Mandrel bent tube)

I used '66 Mustang clutch linkage 'cause you can get it at any Mustang supply house. The crossmember is a V8 Maverick piece that I turned around backwards and welded an extension to.

Do a search for "headers" and grab a tall one. There are plenty of threads on fitment, installation, opinions, rants, etc. (y)

    So there I was......
crystal clear skies, about high of almost 60 degrees today so me and the wife took the Maverick on a trek to Shelbyville and back (about) 80 miles round trip and she was running Sa-Weeeet!!!! And of course on the "Home" stretch....litterally the home stretch she starts with a gentle rattle then quickly she turned to a dreaded knock..... the top end has always been loud (Very "Ticky") since i got her back in Nov. A dose of Marvel and she got considerably quieter. Was figuring a couple sticky lifters. After a $75 "Rollback ride" home for the last 8 miles I lift the driver side valve cover and find 3 bent pushrods.....All intake side #1,#2 and #4 substantially bent. Havent opened up passenger side yet. Oil still clean - No "Milkshake" so very good sign......Valve springs do not appear broken no parts laying around up in the top end at any rate....on a good note I now know that I Do have Cobra Roller Rockers installed....as long as I didnt just trash them... Anybody got any good pointers out there on this one?? This is "First" for me, I have had parts come flying out from underneath, and out the sides but never this.....til today.....

sounds like an oil pressure issue caused you to collapse the lifters and it progressively got worse until you had so much slop that the pushrods bent. You may have had incorrectly adjusted valves(preload) too.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge to confirm pressure as acceptable?

I'd start a new thread about the issue and get more visibility by putting it in the proper section. :)

Thanks for the info! I just last night figured out how to post a new thread so will re post this. Oil pressure was running 50-60 all day. As i was pulling over to the side of the road it was just under 20 at idle as as i shut it down. Temp stayed 190 all day long as well. New to this SBF stuff. Found out my Roller Rockers are not "adjustable" (aside from shims) so having to learn about how to set the right pre-load. GM rollers are 0- Lash + 1/4 turn...... So let the "learning" begin...:hmmm:

first welcome to this site. regarding your 302 woes. the dr side cylinders are numbered 5,6,7,8. do a inspection on the rockers. I had a issue years ago with fatigued rockers.the valve tip side of the rocker got weak and aloud the rocker arm to start to stretch. same scenaro noise wise as you. replaced all rockers with new, adjusted valves, started it up and and had no problems. I also changed oil, filter.just ck all things for water damage,(fluids mixed together). If no engine smoke just b4 you shut it down, then hopefully no engine damage. Might wanna do a compression ck both dry and wet.good luck and happy motoring:thumbs2:
