So I finally got the gas cap I’ve been pining over for months, the deluxe bottle cap top. After many failed eBay auctions and missed posts “I got it!” :yahoo::bananaman:yahoo::bananaman:yahoo:

Long story short, I spent a few bucks getting the one I want and don’t want to see it lost or stolen or give easy access to the $4.13 per gallon gas in the tank.

I went ahead and ordered the scott drake lock, fairly inexpensive and thought I would give it a shot. Has anybody installed one or know of another way to “lock” the cap? I appreciate any advice, thanks fellas!

I've got that on mine, it's pretty easy to do. One hole to drill through the piece that bolts to the tail panel, align the rod and mark the cap, then dril the matching hole in the backside of the cap.

Does it work as advertised and are there any other methods? It' looks like it will work pretty good but I like "options" J.

Pix, fresh off the camera. The hardest part is my fat fingers trying to find that tiny release pin under the latch assembly.

I plan on doing one of these pin-type locks, especially now that I have a really sweet Deluxe Comet cap.

I was originally going to install a repop flip-up 71 Mustang cap, but liking the Deluxe cap better, so that is up for sale now.

So here’s my Scott Drake locking gas cap install.

Remembering the kit was made for Mustang’s the parts themselves are quality (IMHO) and worth the $8 dollars. The problem is that the Ford factory brackets/braces are further apart than the Mustang. This makes the Scott Drake bracket too small for a direct fit.
(These are the two braces on either side of the gas filler neck.)

There are several ways to go about fixing the issue and making it work for our Maverick/Comet’s. This is only one of many, the one I came up with.

I Largely I followed their directions, with regards to drill size etc.. I did however buy two additional parts. One ¼ inch by 1 ¼ bolt (I actually bought 1 ½ inch length because my hardware store was out of the 1 and ¼ inch bolt and I had to cut mine down). The second part was an aluminum spacer with a ¼ hole by 11/16 inch length. I had intended to buy a piece of round stock and cut it to fit but I found both parts for under $2 dollars so I took the easy way!

The second part was a ¼ Ferrule and Stop set (for heavy wire clamping). See picture below.

Step four, use drill bit or other marker to score the fresh ink (that’s where to drill!)

Step seven, install gas cap and finish assembly of the Scott Drake pin, spring, cotter pin and bracket. Slide the assembly through the rear and through the new gas cap hole.

Step nine, spray a little lube on the pin and step back and smile!

Like I said above, plenty of ways to get it done, this is just what I came up with. Hope it helps!
