Hey guys lets try this again. I just got a 86 Lincon with a EFI/overdrive (complete car) I was just wondering about a few things. Should I extend all the elec harness to mount all that stuff in the trunk on the back of the seat or loose glove box (battery is already in trunk). Should I use the overdrive trans or my org C4, right now the 9 inch mounted in will be sporting 3:90's, and will be a driver not a racer. Will or can the sending unit/pump unit be midfied to fit the Comet fuel tank, I was told EFI 302 are very fussy when it comes to fuel pressure. email demoguy_1@yahoo.ca
Personally I typically use an external mount pump for such swaps. I used one of an 86 Audi. They need between 35 to 45 depending on demand. I myself would have gotten the HO set up. Easier to play with and tune more performance potential as well. Not a flame either just MO. All in all if it is a daily driver it should work for you. The AOD would be my choice with those gears. Good Luck and keep us posted of your progress.
Not knowing much more than in this thread, I'd personally sell off the aod and 86 engine in favor of an 87+ high output engine. If you're going through all the trouble, better to start off with a better engine to begin with. The aod's are really nasty unreliable, horsepower sucking pieces of trash. I wouldn't use one if it was the last tranmission on earth (stock) use the c4, imo. If you're running gears, then the aod may be the only choice if you do a lot of freeway time. Fortunately, there is a lot that can be done to the aod's to bring back the power and make it more reliable. (an aod equipped car vs a t5 equipped car will be a full second slower in the quarter stock for stock) get yourself a one piece input shaft, as the originals are hollow, get yourself a summit trans cooler, a good shift kit, and a good torque converter, at the minimum. I would also suggest a manual valve body, so you can shift it yourself without breaking the thing. If you don't plan on at least doing this as a minimum, then don't go with the aod unless you like replacing trannies and getting all your horsepower eaten up. My .02
Jerm, sounds like you were burned pretty badly with a junk AOD. I know more than a few guys who run the AOD's on the street/strip in Fox Mustangs. Granted, it's not as efficient as a (or most) C4's, and it's a lot heavier, however, he said his car is going to be a 'driver not a racer'. I think he'd love having that extra gear. My vote: AOD for driver car. I'd also look at putting the computer (EEC) in the passenger side kick panel (where I located mine). You shouldn't have to splice any wires that way. Otherwise, the splicing of all those wires would be a big enough headache that you'd go back to carb. All this, of course, IMHO.
Never actually burned by one, smart enough never to have one. I did do an aod to t5 conversion on my bro's car. I just have a ton of experience with the aod trannies, and for one, the loss in hp because of them is incredible, it's a fact that an aod equipped stang vs a t5 equipped one will be 3/4 to a full second slower, (stock for stock) They are extremely unreliable too, I'm just looking out for him. They're great when built, definetly, I'd give him that, but I've seen way to many horrer stories from these boat anchors
Jerry, I too have a lot of experience with AOD like right now running one behind a Kenne Bell Blower at nearly 8 psi boost in a 4000 lb car for the last year and a half and also ran it on the strip. Your jumping to conclusions a bit to fast and painting with too broad a brush. My AOD has 60K miles since being rebuilt four years ago. 75, On the 86 Lincoln deal; be awhere that the engine control is Speed Density as were all Mark VIIs right up to their last year of 92, and the heads are not the better 87 and later units (e7) and the pistons have no valve reliefs in the crowns for any lift increases in the future. For stock use, still fine to use but limited for good mods when compaired to 87 and later engines converted to Mass Air engine mangement. If you use the c4 Auto trans, you must use a special aftermarket 157 tooth flywheel that is drilled to accept the c4 converter and "balanced" for the 5L HO engine. If trans kick down is desired you need a custom arm assembly on the trans for the original AOD TV cable to operate. If using the AOD, the TV cable must be checked for adjustment or the trans will be lost right away trying to drive the car. The trans will fill the tunnel space more than the C4 did and 'may' present exhaust issues with whatever system you want to use as well as rear trans mount and 'possible' small driveshaft length change. One last thing is that you must become the expert on the whole setup because there will be few to go to for help with problem other than engine codes after the setup is in and all worked out. And don't forget the oxygen sensors in the head pipes. For a fuel pump, use an 85-87 F150 pickup pump mounted on a bracket back near the tank. The fuel pickup method needs to be decided upon and I would suggest the tank have a sump istalled to keep fuel starvation from happening at levels less than 1/4 tank. Good luck. Been there already.
Is yours a stock aod, or an upgraded one as I suggested? No doubt the aod is a fine machine when built properly, however, since he is using an non-high output 5.0 engine, it is unlikely he plans on beefing up the aod with what is necessary to make it a worthy machine. As well, don't fear the speed density, as the speed density 5.0's are known to be slightly faster than their mass air counterparts, (stock for stock again of course) and it's only if he plans on running a large cam that he would need to go with mass air. I couldn't agree more about those e6 heads, they are purely garbage, however, don't fear the flat pistons, as he'll still have enough room to run a pair of e7's if he wishes, just don't go crazy with a cam, as mentioned. Best of luck to the original poster.
Ask Lentech about AOD's. The design of them is a LOT simpler/bulletproof than a C4. In fact, the geartrain design is nearly identical to a Powerglide or FMX. Very strong. Weak links are OD band and input shaft. Buddy had one in a '89 Mustang and beat it like a red-headed stepchild. Never broke....and this guy can break an anvil with a handful of feathers. Most failures with them are either due to TV cable/rod adjustment problems or just plain stupidity (or both). I'd rather have OD than free up 12-15 HP any day. You'd be surprised on how many folks will agree with me!
I agree with you.... Im considering trying to find a AOD to put behind the 351w Im going to put in the old truck...... or maybe finding one for the 396 FE I built and leave the 3.70 gears in it
I had an AOD 5.0 (91 mustang coupe)ran it up to 100,000 miles with nothing more than an aftermarket trans cooler. They do take alot of HP away, but if you keep your low rear gears and want an auto driver what else do you do?Buy a high $ adapter kit for an equally high $ 700R4 or TH200R4 that are both pretty weak themselves? No thanks,I'll take the AOD.Put a good converter in it and a good trans cooler(heat kills them twice as bad as a 3-speed auto)and it'll last just fine.Just my 2 cents.
I firmly believe in added trans coolers... run them in everything. Another thing i believe in is electric fans... BIG electric fans and BIG trans coolers are great
Tks guys. Any of you have pics of a Mavrick/Comet with the EFI already installed. I want to see what its going to look like.
This picture made me realize how badly I need to upload newer stuff. It looks a lot better under the hood now(although still very crammed with stuff). I still do not have shocktower to firewall crossmembers though..have not figured out how I want to deal with that yet. This should give you a rough idea of what it will look like though...the big blue bracket and the A-6 air condition compressor are from a '75 or '76 Mercury Monarch. I now have the battery in the trunk and an air cleaner box where the battery was...guess I gotta get a more recent pic...
