I've got one of the Pro Stock hood scoops like Nicholson ran early on. I'd like to do a Pro Stock style car one day but I gotta get mine done first. I actually tried to buy 2 nos Motorwheel Spyder wheels last week but the guy had already sold them.
Thanks for the responses. Here's a few pics. The wheels currently on the car are just rollers, the new wheels are Fenton Gyro 15x11. If you have a set of 15x3.5 Fentons drilled in a Ford pattern, let me know because I'm shopping! The engine is a core 351W. The tranny tunnel has been enlarged to fit a C6 (car has a C4 in it right now). Not crazy about the Cougar taillights and considering replacing them with the stock tail panel and Mav lights. I'm probably going with a top loader. Researching a cable or hydraulic setup for the clutch. Either seem like less hassle than stock. Doing some measuring and research on the early Pro Stocks for tower modifications. Spent some time today going thru everything. Have all the trim and pieces needed. Now I need to get to work!
I've often thought it would interesting.............although a lot of work to reposition the front suspension outward like some of Pro Stocks did back in the day. Kind of like this;
Why did they do, just move the stock suspension outward and use different offset wheels? Did they move the frame rails out too? Did they use shorter a-arms?
It looks like they just moved the coli springs outboard at the top, standing them straight up. Then they sectioned the towers and re-welded them back in. Like back in my stock car days when the rules said "suspension must remain in stock position" - on a Maverick like this, I would read that as being still attached to the upper A-frame and still in the tower
Basically the stock suspension was moved out.................in Pro Stock they did have rules.........kind of like Super Stock.............but if you were a big name like Gapp/Roush or Don Nicholson, well..........the tech inspectors kind of went over the car with one eye closed. I think the control arms were still Ford, but from a bigger car and were a little longer............the front wheels were 0 offset and sometimes + offset.
Sound like my oval track inspectors - "stock suspension" meant we used screw in Mopar ball joints, re-reamed 64 Impala spindles, hollow Trans Am 1 1/4 inch sway bar, Camaro 2 turn steering box and 82 Monte Carlo calipers - all STOCK parts - they screwed up years ago by not using the word OEM for chassis used - it is all in how you read the rules
pretty familiar with bloomfield, we used to go to their Ford show when we still had the 77. they always had a nice turn out, good bunch down there. keep thinking about going back but never had anything to put in, besides the daily (and that just doesnt seem right to me ) I'm also in S.E. Iowa. (washington) welcome
I was the President of the Ia/Mo Ford Club for 9 years. My '66 F100 won the truck class last year. I've raced Ford Powered circle track dirt cars for the last 20+ years. Stock cars, modifieds and late models. I have a lot of Windsor stuff around (including complete race motors that are for sale) but really wanting to go 429 Boss for this one, may have to start with 351C. They moved the upper mount out and some even shortened the upper a-frame a bit. They either lengthened the lower a-frame of used a big car lower (I've been told both). If you compare the wheel location, the tires are a lot further out on the old Pro Stocks than a stock production car. Most rolled the ront fender lip or simply removed it. I'm aiming at an early '70 Pro Stock. Nothing too exotic but have the full flavor. Move the rear springs inboard a couple inches, Lakewood slapper bars like the first cars had, simple roll bar, 2 bucket seats and a shifter. If anyone knows of a set of 15x3.5 Fenton Gyro wheels out there, let me know. Supposedly have the rear 15x11 Gyros bought. Using a 29/15.50x15 rear tire, 28" tall front tire. They made minor rear wheelwell trim jobs. You have to look to notice it on the early cars. Thanks for the comments and pics. Appreciate it! SPark
I was the President of the Ia/Mo Ford Club for 9 years. I probably talked to you. Did you try to get a mini-meet going here? My '66 F100 won the truck class last year at that show. Got a fresh 351C 4bbl yesterday for the Maverick. Also got the tunnel ram and a bunch of parts ordered. Will be starting out with the Cleveland and if things work well, moving to a Boss 429 later. Later, SPark
My friends 70 Pro Stock wasn't backed by Ford...it has a Torsion Bar Suspension from a '70 Plymouth Duster with a Pinto rack & pinion steering. A flexible steel cable used for the steering shaft.
