Im having a problem figuring out a new ECM and maf/injectors.On an EFI swap. engine specs 89 roller 302 turned into>>>> 306 with trickflow r intake 75mm 185 alum heads not sure which yet. with 1.7 rollers and e303 cam hedman headers long tube stock HO crank and hyp pist.engine has zero miles not even installed yet. AOD trans 8.8 rear for now disreguard wiring Im having a problem figuring which maf,tb,and ecm to get based upon what setup i have. here is what i know. mass air flow and tb must be larger than intake opening (75mm) for best results. so i get a 76 or 80mm maf and 75mm tb.which is calibrated to work with the injectors (24lb) i want to use. option1------- with the firing order being HO (351) firing order.could i use a thunderbird ECM that is equipped to run MAF and just plug everything in (as long as the maf and injectors are calibrated for eachother)? option2------ i get a mustang regular 302 a9p ECM thats equipped to run MAF and reprogram firing order. option 3------ i am all wrong and the MAF,intake, injectors need to be re-programmed to the ECM anyhow? If the 3rd statement is true which ecm do i start with to have re programmed??one from a truck, from a mustang, from a HO engine?does it matter? I need a crash course on slightly modding engines and picking proper MAF sensors and ECM's.I have been trying to do it on my own and cant find much on this topic.and im bad with forums so excuse me in advance.
I’m working my way towards doing a similar conversion in my ’71. Also, I’m using an ’89 HO motor. I am not the expert here but will inform you as to what I know and if wrong, I’m sure someone will correct me. I don’t think your throttle body has to be bigger than the intake, but you certainly do not want it smaller. Since you are not stroking the motor and your using a stock cam, the 75mm should be fine. Your 24# injector size should be fine. I also will be running an AOD. You want to make sure your ECM is for an AOD since there is an extra pin in the plug for the trans that is not there in the manual trans ECM. I have an A9P. If you want to get the most out of the motor, you really want to get the ECM reprogrammed. The non-stock MAF play tricks on the computer to get it to work which throws off the tables that the computer relies upon to make its calculations. I don’t think it matters which ECM you get, other than AOD, the reprogramming will make up for the deficiencies. I’m going to go with the BAMA chip mainly because the guy who is building my motor is a dealer for them and will dyno-tune a custom program for me. I would call one of the tuners at American Muscle and get their take on your motor. Below are a couple links to sites which I found to be good in explaining the conversion process. http://webpages.charter.net/darrell1/mustang_efi.html http://www.rjminjectiontech.com/pages/50-compatibility-list http://www.americanmuscle.com/sct-4bank-custom-8793gt.html#fitment Let us know how it works out. The ECM should be from a Mustang and be mass air('89-'93 best), the others are not as readily tunable... It's possible to use '94-'95 Stang, '91-'93 T-Bird and a few others... I've run A9P(auto), C3W1(Ford racing, auto) and A9L(5-speed) in my '88 T-Bird AOD with Trick Flow heads & cam, 24lb inj & a 76mm Pro-M MA... All turned same numbers at the strip but the A9L has slightly better street manors... Tuning was done only by setting timing and adjusting fuel pressure... BTW firing order of the cam and ECM must match if you don't want drivability problems...
honestly i would go with a megasquirt 2 or microsqirt. you dont need to run a mass air meter with either of these. they have a great support community online. consider if you buy a good maf and need to get a chip to tune with you will have spent that same amount as just getting a mega squirt. also the e cam is pretty tame for 185 heads. i would suggest looking at trick flows stage 1 cam or the f cam.
planning on these heads still tho reguardless of price,I dont want to build up another engine for more power once im used to this one and then have to get better heads.i dont mind if the heads out perform the cam a bit.id rather upgrade cam later than heads and cam.
def going to go with the 93 thunderbird ecm 250 reman from orielly auto parts and i got a charge account with them so i can probly get it for 190 if i talk nice to them seeing as how i spend a few grand there a week buying parts for work on other peoples cars.have it tuned to match the 24lb inj and 76mm maf and i think il be good to go.il keep u posted thanks.
I got my A9P from Pick and Pull for $40. Better unit and better price! I would check the local junk yards first for an A9P which would be a better choice for your build. Just a suggestion.
im going to get the same one u got but i dont trust used.I know theres a 5% chance they will go bad but i like to spend the extra and know i got something with a little bit more of a guarantee.thanks for all your help much appreciated.
