I don't think it's a 6 or 8 cylinder issue. I think some years had the "slot" type (for lack of a better term) and some had the eyelet/pin type. It looks like you need a pedal setup for the eyelet/pin type.
The early style pedal ran from 70-72, and then they changed the end on the cable for 73-on. The crimped-on end on the earlier one can get pulled off over time. The later design seems more durable. Another way to tell early vs late is that the early ones only have one bolt attaching it to the firewall and later ones have two.
Not sure it's that cut and dry...I have a '71 and a '72, and they both have the eyelet style. OP just needs to be sure he finds the right pedal style before he goes through the trouble of removing one only to discover it's not the correct one. The bolts attaching it may be a better indicator than year Perhaps it was build plant specific or something.
