Been on the lookout for a 60's-70's short bed Ford or Chevy for a budget project, but with their usual popularity, and the rat rod and slammer crazes....the prices have been out of budget, and the good deals snapped up before you can even get a look at them unless you live 24/7 on Cragslist or scan the classified ads before the ink dries. I just happened to catch this one on CL about an hour after it listed.....the price was in budget, fairly straight with minimum rust, and best of all, was only 30 min away. I called, agreed to meet the seller within the hour and check out the truck. I get there, it's what I was looking for, and the seller took 8 calls on the truck the first 10 minutes I'm there, so, no haggling, I buy it at his price and seal the deal. Owner had pulled the previous 302/FMX due to oil smoke/consumption, had bought a low milage HO 302 and rebuilt FMX to install, but heart problems robbed him of his inspiration and ability. I'm taking up where he left off. He sooo appreciated my not haggling on price, saving him from the worry if any of the dozen+ other callers might have paid his price, he threw in the old engine/trans, two box loads of new parts for the new engine, and a brand new Edelbrock carb. Now the fun starts
I figured it'd be an awesome tow rig for my Falcon gasser. Not for long hauls, of course, but it'd be sweet rolling into local car shows, cruises, with the 66 pulling a pure 60's Gasser on a tow-bar behind it. Who knows?, if-and-when I decide to sell the gasser, maybe I'll add the truck for the ultimate nostalgia package deal. For now, plans are leaning toward getting it running, then working on lowering it a bit for cool stance,.... wheels & tires, then, maybe a two-tone satin/matte paint job. Right now, it's the parts chase. Original grill, straight rear bumper and little stuff. Found a nice front bumper in the bed with the HO motor and trans
That makes me miss my old 64! Have been tossing around the idea of getting another one,do you mind me asking how much you had to shell out for it?. Btw power steering and disc brakes from a 73-79 f100/f150 bolt right on the 65/66's
I paid $1,700 for it, mainly for the lack of rust. The doors and bedsides are a little wavy in places, but that's easier to deal with than rust patching and pounds of old bondo. I've already sold the old engine/trans and some other engine parts the seller threw in, so that's got my initial investment down to $1450 It's already got power steering.......the disc brakes will probably be one of the first things on my list after it's up and running. It needs a complete brake job anyway. I'm terribly tempted to drop my 460 interceptor motor in it.....I've already got the Crites mounts for the 460 to go in my Galaxie, that use the 289 frame stands.......just like the frame stands in the truck But, the Galaxie is just about ready for the engine swap......decisions, decisions! Love your old 64!
very nice truck...i've wanted another one for a while..& to put a 80's powerstroke in it..but i need to finnish my other projects..my first resto truck was a 1961 ford unibody shortbox pickup sweet truck..actually sold it to my dad's buddy dirt cheap when i was like 18..not sure what he did with it. (im 24now)
Thats a good deal i would have paid that no problem.You could always find a run of the mill 429/460 the swap is easy useing 360/390 mounts or 351m mounts and a adapter plate on the block.Love these trucks.
Not a big fan of the aftermarket tube grill. I really like the original grill, both chrome or painted. LMC has everything I need, but the $600 price tag for the grill assembly quickly killed the joy of ready availability, so, it was off to ebay and Craigslist. Lucked out on ebay, found, bid on and won the auction for this grill and headlight/signal bezels in awesome used condition for just over $200 with shipping. Seller even included an extra set of headlight bezels ($80 a-piece from LMC!!) I also dragged the front bumper from the bed of the truck, and with some new "bumper bolts" nuts and washers from the hardware store, bolted it back up to the truck. The bumper's finish isn't great, and it's got a slight bend, but it looks better than two rusty frame rails sticking out from under the grill.
