This is what I'm using. If I'm not mistaken it was originally cast for the 429/460 police cars, but later used without the oil cooler plumbing (not drilled and tapped for it, but as you can see the bosses are there) on the Econoline vans with a 460.
The pictures below illustrate what the problem is. I think that the FMS 90* adapter will not solve the problem because the owner wants to use the mechanical fuel pump. Also as you can see in the pictures the Crites header tube on the #5 and #6 cylinders are right where the oil filter is and there is only 2 ¼” clearance from the block to the header. I know the headers must work but I am just wondering what adapter works in this situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS
You need to relocate the filter just as those who are doing V8 Ranger swaps. You'll need a 90* block adapter, which has 1/2" NPT inlet/outlets parallel to the block. Transdapt makes these as do some other vendors. There are kits that include everything needed to do this, but they come with barbed hose fittings and use hose clamps to secure the hoses. For this reason I suggest just buying the block adapter and filter mount separately and using AN fittings and your choice of hydraulic hoses.
Just pay attention to the IN/OUT ports when you plumb the hoses. The "OUT hose from the fitting goes into the "IN" port on the filter mount. Same goes for the return hose, OUT on the filter mount goes to the "IN" on the block adapter. Seen a few guys on the Ranger sites get em confused and end up with zero oil pressure. The Transdapt seals with a rubber O ring and as far as I know they don't sell the O ring separately, I used one mount for ten years in my Ranger but resealed it with home cut copper sheet as I didn't trust the original O ring to reseal after several years use. It may have, but once you dropped the motor into a Ranger, it was too much trouble to pull the motor back out, just in case the O ring didn't seal. On a Ranger, the adapter (and hoses) have to be on the block before the motor is dropped in, there's not enough room between the block and steering gear box to remove or install the adapter. Your's looks like there's enough room to install the adapter, not sure about the hoses, those can be harder to tighten (AN style) in place, especially since you'd want to use a backup wrench on the block fitting to avoid stressing the adapter while tightening the fittings. The good thing about the Transdapt is there's four ports to choose from that comes in handy incase some of the ports are in the wrong position when the adapter is tightened. I've seen at least one billet adapter sold that was ajustable to position the inlet/outlets where needed. I don't recall the vendor. A search on www.therangerstation.com or www.rangerpowersports.com in the V8 forums could be a way to find it. Or just do a web search.
