Until I put a 16 pound cap on my car, I was loosing coolant every time I drove it... After it has never lost a drop, my over flow bottle never gets wet... I have a aluminum rad with a 6 blade mechanical fan... I will be updating to a Taurus fan...
I think I saw on ebay NEW Taurus fan for 78$. I am now questioning whether or not my cheap temp. relay can hold up to the Taurus fan. I have a gm large case alternator so I have 180A on tap. Also anyone have pictures of how well the rad shroud from the Taurus fits?
i would try a higher temp t stat like 180. reason is this. the t stat is susposed to close to stop the coolant flow in the radiator so the coolant has more time in the radiator to get rid of more heat. so with a 160 the coolant gets too much heat in it to the point that the radiator cant get it cool enough to get the coolant in the motor cool enough to close the t-stat. ive seen higher temp t stats fix the exact problem you have. i would also get a fan shroud that does cover 100% of the radiator.
I actually realized that with the electric water pump I can not use a thermostat. It dead heads the pump and will severely shorten its life apparently. Also might be why it pops a fuse every now and then (tstat closes) and loads the pump up suddenly.
you should be running the bypass hose from the t stat housing to the water pump. that will stop the dead head effect. they make flow restrictors kits that have several different disks that replace the t stat that have different size holes to be able to change the flow rate to figure out your optimum flow rate.
I knew that damn hose was for something! I never thought about that. The thermostat is being used as a restrictor right now, worked okay on my short drive. I simply need more cooling at low speed, thus why I am looking into a fan and shroud. My current fan is only 900cfm!
wow that looks like a perfect fit! Has anyone purchased the 70-80$ "new" units from ebay? Do they preform as well as the oem Taurus fan?
If that is a Taurus, then I have no idea what mine came off of. It fits pretty well, too. anyone know what this might be from? This is an old picture on my original radiator, but it is the same one that is in the first picture in post #2
Duh! Answered my own question. Went to my Della website http://scooper77515.fordmaverick.net/august2005.htm , and I had this written in it... So, I got it from a 90s car, in a junk yard, and it has been running fine on my car since August 2005. Can't complain. Only $30 from the junk yard. If I did it again, I would buy a new one from a local parts house.

HOLY CHRIST! 6000 cfm!? I am going to get a "1990 Taurus 3.8L radiator fan assembly" delievered from LKQ tomorrow for 35$ wow. I currently have a 40A thermostatic relay thingy for a fan. Just a generic one from oreileys, I have a 30A fuse on it. Would this power the fan on high long term? That is 500W+ of power the relay can handle. Surge current will be high on startup, but continuous cant be 30A right? What worries me is that the fan will be kicking on and off quite a bit and that cheapo relay may not be up to the job...
