Hello all, I recently acquired my dads 1971 comet gt that he bought brand new for 2300$. I drooled over this car when I was a little kid, thought it was so much cooler than a mustang, The car was a daily driver for him and put 100k miles on it chasing my mom in college. Well he he has been fighting cancer the last few years, and the car has been in storage for 20+ years. He thought he would never see or drive it again, Well I got it out of storage, emptied 19 gallons of sludge out of tank and went through fuel system(he upgraded to larger tank in 75') and replace bias ply tires. He was able to drive it one more time before going to hospital, and broke tires loose hittin 2nd and 3rd gear(oh yeah he put a 4sp toploader in it in 72') here is a pic
to the forum! That is a great looking car and you are a 1st class guy to do that for your Dad. He must have been so thrilled to drive it again. Again, welcome from Wisconsin .........
Well me and my dad had a lot of plans for it. He always wanted side exit exhaust, the old cobbled together mustang dual exhaust he had rusted off so so I had a custom true dual with H-pipe going into some stainless mufflers that have the in and out on same end then curved pipe right in front of back tires. Now I need to find floor pans for it, they have been gone since I was 5(29 years ago), he always told me not to push too hard on floor in back seat, now I know why, there is only carpet there. He also bought a posi unit for it just never got installed, I really wanted to install it with him, but right now he is just barely hanging on to life. he has lived longer than doctors predicted. This car is a blast to drive manual steering, manual brakes 4speed, tho is very easy to drive, Brakes work awesome wouldn't change to disc for a million bucks, and steering is very manageable even at slow speeds. This is a driving car, no drink holders, no texting, no ipods, just rumble and exhaust.
From Atlantic Canada!! Thanks for sharing your awesome story. I know all too well what you're going through. Very sharp looking car, though. Take care of your Dad.
X2 A couple weekends ago I saw a orig, one owner '72 GT that's a sister car to yours... His still had the three in the floor, high back buckets, no P/S and just under 100K mi...
