Who's done it? Wondering what was done to the floor to get the shifter thru. I am thinking about a 6"x4" hole to get the trans up in the rear, for driveline angle.
I cut a significant portion of the upper trans hump and removed the brace. Some guys have done it without removing anything but the brace, but my driveline angle wasn't where I wanted it without raising it about 1" more. (I located the tailshaft at the same height of the C4)
I'm thinking that the rectangular box the shifter sits on, needs to be thru the tunnel for me to get the proper driveline angle.
ive done 3 conversions now. ive cut a notch in the tunnel support rib to clear the shift linkage tube. then i cut a hole in the floor just larger than the shifter box. the front edge up the hole lines up with the back edge of the support rib. the box does not protrude into the car. all 3 conversions were set up to maintain the stock drive line angles
I used 71gold crossmember. Cut a hole in the floor to poke the shifter through. Stock driveshaft and no cuttig or grinding needed anywhere else.
heres what ive got in this pic you can see the support rib. it has marks on it where it needs to be clearanced i hope these help.
Interesting...Mine does not actually protrude through the tunnel. only one or two "ribs" of the "rubber" stick through...
My son and I have also completed this swap but with the complete powertrain of a 5.0 Mustang, EFI etc. We use the Mustang Steve quadrant and cable.
Great response guys!!!!! Time will tell if mine will fit like yours, 5.0 efi and T-5 from 88 mustang as well. BUT my car is a 70 and the tunnel is not as wide at the top as yours, and it may also be not as tall, we'll see.
I have to admit when I did this install(1999), no one I knew had done a T5 in a Maverick and it was all trial and error, not to mention I was being a little impatient because the boss was yelling at me to get that thing off of his rack! Lots of info on the early Mustang stuff but no Maverick. I had the original placement too high which is why I got into the tunnel more than others and if I were to do it again, I bet I could just notch the brace and use the original floor shift hump. Yours being a 70, I'm pretty sure you will have a little more notching than the later cars with the bigger tunnel, but I would definitely start small and work your way up to achieve your desired driveline angles.
i just did the conversion on jear30200's car. its a 70. their was no considerable difference in tunnel modifications. my rubber boot is mounted on the tunnel not on the trans. i like to cut the large hole to be able to install and remove the shifter in the car. it makes it a lot easier to install and remove the trans. i put a plate across the front of the hole then put the rubber boot over the back half.
Mine is the same as Bryant's....Notch the rib and and make the hole large enough to get the shifter in and out
Yeah, pretty much. Normally the race car look doesn't do much for me, but I love everything about this car.
