Taking a study break and been thinking about body work.... still a long way off. I want to mount comet tail lights upside down on my Maverick. Probably switch left and right so the reverse lights are still on the inside. The original plan was to have the hump in the tail panel cut out and replaced with flat metal to mount them too. Do you think that's a better idea than cutting the raised tail light mounting locations out of a comet tail panel and welding them in place? Would that even work/fit? Only ever seen pictures of a comet tail panel, so I don't know how practical of an idea that is....
I hink the only thing I'd worry about with the flat sheet metal is water leaking in if you didn't have a good gasket to seal it up.. Welding in the comet humps wouldn't be bad if you have the skills and put them on straight, it also could easily turn into a mess where you want to just cut it all out and put a new tail panel in.
The original thought was to put a new tail panel in, but I like the way the comet lights look upside down better... so I'd be at square one either way. Good point about the flat metal. Didn't think of that. I'll be having a pro do my welding - he's pretty meticulous. I guess now I'd just have to decide whether to leave the center Maverick hump in the tail panel and weld in the comet humps, or to replace the Mav hump with flat metal and then weld in the comet humps.... Looks like the hump would at least have to stay there near the gas cap
I took a Cougar panel out and just put the Maverick piece I needed for light location/gas filler location back in. I would think the same thing could be done with a Comet panel turned upside down. Careful measuring will tell.
That's a pretty kewl idea! Thanks! Then it would be easier to make sure they're not crooked Altho, looking at it again I might have to move the tail lights towards the middle alittle bit so that the corners will fit at the top....
