I moved your post to a thread of it's own ........ search the forum, lots of threads on bumper swapping. But someone will post a link here soon enough I'm sure ......
I figure you want to swap out the nice bumper "bench seats" for narrower styled earlier bumpers used up to 1973? I had a 74 Comet with larger bumpers and now have 73 Comet with narrower rear bumper. In order to swap out...... have to purchase narrow rear bumper along with brackets........ mark/drill out lower rear tail light panel, 2 holes per side for bumper bracket bolts to pass through........... then, there is reinforce bracket/plate that was welded to the truck floor/back of the tail light panel, where bolt passes through and then bolts up to rear bumper bracket nuts. (nuts with spring clip which slips onto bracket). this reinforce bracket/plate was positioned over the center of the frame rail and welded to the trunk floor and back of tail light panel. I think AutoKrafters may have these brackets new Rear Bumper Bracket Brace s ’70 - ’73 Maverick; ’71 - ’73 Comet. LH and RH. ............................ D1ZZ-17B862A............pr............29.95 best to contact them to find out for sure, if these are the correct brackets, otherwise you may have to locate used, but because they are welded to the vehicle, you would have to cut/grind welds. you also need to locate quarter panel end extensions, as they are different than ones used with big bumpers. then you may want to get the lower rear valance panel too...... regarding the fronts narrower where only available on the 70-72 models and I am not sure how they where attached or what brackets. I know they are several members who have done this swap, so perhaps one will post something, good luck!
Here's how I done it Rear http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick_4.html Front http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick_30.html Fender notch http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick_38.html
I did my '74 to strip bumpers by finding a rear one in a salvage yard along with front and rear valances (taught myself how to use a hammer and dolly set to knock out the dents in valances) than I used the "Joe Dirt" method to modify the front bumper. than fabricated my own bumper mounts front and back. If I wasn't able to find a rear bumper I was going to do the same to the back as I did to the front bumper.
