I have replaced the mechanical fuel pump twice on my '77, over the course of only 2,000 miles. I'm chalking it up to cheap overseas garbage, and I'm wondering if anyone has had better luck than the Autozone/Advance/OReilly specials?

The gas tank could be dirty and messing with the pump.

Third time is the charm. You're getting better results than I did...I got little over two months of service on the first two fuel pumps before they swapped it for a good one. They tried to pull "the first pump had the lifetime warranty...the replacement only has a 30 day warranty". If they didn't have a store full of customers and they wanted/needed me to shut up, I probability wouldn't have got the third fuel pump free. They did say they can sell me better quality pump but it will cost me more money.

I wud go to Summit/Jegs and get me a Edelbrock EDL-1725 "assuming U have a 289-351W" either for abt 110.00. "Made In USA", or Holley HLY-12-833 @ abt $75.00 "not sure where mfg". If u don't mind replacing them until u get one that works then those "knock-off's, are ur shot. You generally get what u pay for....

Im on my 3rd vatozone pump in about a year. They just start pouring fuel out. I think its the ethanol they put in the gas, had the same problem with accel pump diaphragms.

I always use parts that come from top names mostly. The biggest problem that I found , are reboxed products that sat in a warehouse for years. Rubber goes bad. But the pick up in the tank should be checked to see if its not clogged. The metal line that runs down the frame on the drivers side should also be replaced. If the car sat for a long period of time. I went threw this putting the 74 Comet on the road last year. The first 3 months had nothing but fuel issues. Even with a new tank an sending unit. Use Sea Foam gas treatment. :hmmm:
