Just a thought here.......................did you have a temp gauge on the transmission. If the gauge would have been there (I am assuming you don't have one) if there would have been a lot of slippage, you would have seen a spike in temp to maybe 250 or more. I know this is after the fact, but when you tear down this winter that should be on your list to put in the car. Since you will probably have the trans out of the car it would be easy to take the pan off, weld in a bung for a temp sender, and when you put it back together you will be able to monitor the temp in the fluid.............IMHO
Well first there is already a bung in the pan. Second, there doesn't seen anyway to ck slippage other than with a speed sensor on the drive shaft. Competion convertors(buffalo) and my converter man in To say no machine available. Both suggest opening converter for a inspection. Engine dyno time is huge up here. There are several long time companies with engine dynos in TO but its $1000. just to hook it up and then its by the hour. Well I will work on this more later. TTFN Ron Already tore tranny apart. No apparent over heating problem as insected by my tranny guy. Fluid was bright red,no smell of burning oil.Put in new red alto clutches, seals, and even new kevlar bands. Will b back together this week, and now it bed time. 5 am comes early.
Ron, Ok, just thought a temp gauge would show a spike if the trans/converter/stator was slipping as it would been a lot higher than normal. Using a trans temp gauge is kind of like using an oil pressure gauge for the motor...............can let you know ahead of time......hopefully.........before something happens. Wow, that is really expensive. Guess I feel lucky for what I paid. Let us know what happens.
Ya I know the temp guage was needed, but just never got to it. This winter there will be a NEW temp guage in the car.No more surprizes. If I have the time,I'm goin to put the car back together this coming month. Put it on the chassie dyno again, only for 1 pull to ck air/fuel ratio. Then 2-3 pulls to see what happens at 5700 rpm. Only this time I will use a 3800 converter that I know works. If still the flat line thing, then I guessing its the cam. 2 converters wouldn't do the same thing.Maybe the smaller converter is not demanding a large amount of HP. It has been suggested the 4800 requires too much HP to turn it.Will see. Keepin my fingers crossed.
I'm still really curious about that one way clutch on the stator. I have a gut feeling its not over running at speed.
Well after a long cold winter, I have totally rebuilt tranny, new red clutches, new kevlar bands, new servo, new valve body. Also took out 4500 convertor and put in a 3800. it seems to have solved my problems from last year. Now I have too start fine tunin it all. Best was a 11:66, but. this past weekend could only get 12:40s. Hot, humid day. About 95 temp. Lots of you folks here said converter, and lots up here said the same thing.Ya be nice guys, I,m a Bigga boy, over 300.Will keep in touch as the smmer progresses. Thanks for all the help. TTFN Ron
Just a thought, maybe the carbs to small, and your comp ratio is`nt really high enough to take full advantage of your combo.
