i just put in a remain a1 cardone master cylinder in my maverick and im almost ready to add brake fluid..i want to use dot5 fluid but i just checked and the cap on the MC says use dot3 fluid only. is there a legit reason why i should use the dot3? will the dot5 react with a material in the MC? thanks.

Dot 5 is for very very high heat. I have been told it attracts moisture really bad. I would not rec. it for anything but a race car.:yup:

What's silicone? Dot 5? If it is I've been using it in my car for 6 years now, with no issues, but everything was new when I converted it.

That's the key word. Dot 5 won't play with any other DOT. One drop of Dot 3 mixed with Dot 5 will ruin your day

You should use what they system was designed for, which is DOT 3.

    Fer sure...

I've had silicone fluid in my '69 Fairlane since '92 without issue, but as stated everything was all new...

On the moisture issue, silicone fluid does NOT absorb moisture and has some insane boiling point, but is slightly compressible... I've never noticed a real difference but then I went with all new stuff and no doubt got rid of somewhat spongy original hoses...

Dont bleed the master cyl on the car...Bench bleed it or you will most likely damage it beyond repair...

brake fluid that doesnt eat paint that would be awesome. I spilled a little and wiped it off right away only to take the paint with the wipe. good thing it was just elcheapo spray paint

If the MC states use Dot 3, that's what I wud use. I wud just be real careful pouring in the MC. How often do u have to put fluid in a properly operating sys? Very seldom. I wud chose that over possible brake failure. U can protect areas arnd the MC w/ some kind of covering to keep the chance of getting in on painted surfaces to a minimum.

dot 3 and dot 4 are mixable. dot 4 has a higher boiling point than 3.
the only reason to go to dot 4 is if you plan on doing some road racing where you will have constant braking generating higher than normal brake temps constantly. bot will remove paint.
the silicone brake fluid can brake down over time and start leaving silicone deposits in the system.
you can drain a master cylinder that has silicone brake fluid in it for a long time and usually find a salty like substance on the bottom of it. that stuff is in the whole system and can eventually plug stuff up.

I have dot 5 in my mav for 5 years now and don't have any problems, the only reason I used it was it don't damage the paint.
