Hi, I am trying to get my daughter's car on the road and I am having a hell of a time with the RBS carb. I need to get a new carb and wanted to know what is the best one to swap it out with. I still need to make it fit under the hood. 1970 maverick, 250 ci I6. Please see our images to see how far we've gotten in our 2 car garage.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

That carb (I assume you still have it) is super easy to rebuild. That is what I would suggest.

    bad carb

I have rebuilt it twice, and bought another (used) one. no matter what I do the car runs rough, and when i unplug the vacuum line on the intake manifold it runs better (like over fuelling). the idle adjustment screw does not fix the problem.

Have you pulled the plugs out to see how it's running?

    runnin rich

the inside of the intake manifold is black. I have replaced the Montgomery Wards electronic ignition module and distributor with a points distributor. I am thinking about replacing the coil also. :rant2: My daughter so loves the car and the attention it gets her when its running:comet: 017_original.jpg

My 250 has a Carter Yf on it. I got it from a member here off of a low miles car. Runs great. You might want to find a Duraspark set up for it too.

The Carter YF-A is a LOT better carb than the RBS. That's why the RBS was not used after 1974. Or was it 75? My 73 with the RBS has bad heat soak problems. Even with additional carb insulation gaskets. What that means if you went somewhere and the engine was up to temp, if you sat more than 10 minutes, it would not restart without excesive cranking because all the fuel in the bowl has evaporated. Have never had that problem with a Carter YF or the shorter YF-A. Do the switch, you'll like it. Remember to use the YF-A as the YF is too tall for the 250 in earlier models. They are everywhere. I'm actually using one from a 81 300 that came from a F150.

Never had a heat soak problem with my RBS. Do you have the heat shield under the carburetor? Only problem I had was the accelerator didn't move because of no spring under the linkage. I installed a spring and now I don't have to prime the carb to start when cold.

Yup. Had the heat shield and thick fiber gasket.

Mine had a RBS on it new and it ran fine. I threw it away thinking I'd never need it again. :(

I have an rbs on mine and have no issues except heat soak once in awhile. Are you sure your choke is opening all the way? I'll just guess after two kits and another carb, you have a choke, timing, vacuum leaks, or some other ignition problem. :)
