So I'm trying to do my first start of my 302. All the timing is correct, and it cranks over and fires, but it dies right away. I had it started for a few seconds, but turned it off to get ready for the break in. Right when i went to start it back up it would not stay on, i had to have the starter engaged to keep the motor running, as soon as i let off the starter it would shut off. I'm really confused and have no idea what I'm missing here! all help would be greatly appreciated!
That's what I though too. But all wires seem to be on, and it looks like fuel is getting to the carb, because when it does start up for a bit i can give it throttle, and it does respond.
when you have the key in the run position check to see if you have power at the coil positive post? if you dont have power then you need to figure out why. what ignition system do you have?
check to see if the distributor is getting power when the key is in the run position. use a test light or voltmeter. when your cranking, the stock coil positive wire is fed a full 12v from the starter solenoid to help start it. then when you switch back to run, the coil is then feed a reduced voltage from a resistor wire from the ignition switch. im wondering if the voltage from the resistor wire is too low for the msd ready to run or if any power is even getting to the distributor and coil
dp you have a fuel filter in line? manual or electric fuel pump? new lines or old lines? how much gas is in the tank? can you keep the car running for more than a second if you hold the throttle? if you dont have a see through filter in your fuel line put one. not only will it help keep your fuel clean but it will allow you to see how much if any gas is getting up to your carb.
I'm starting to think it's the coil as well. I haven't gotten a chance to take a second look at it yet, but that sounds like the most plausible. I have a mechanical fuel pump brand new eldebrock one, all new fuel lines, and fittings, and a clear fuel filter, the carb is defiantly getting the fuel it needs. So it must be the coil not suppling enough power. I'll have to look into that closer!!
