I either A). have a unique situation or B). am completely lost. I'm hoping it is the latter of the two. I have a 77 Maverick w/ AC (about half the AC stuff is MIA). Currently If I turn the blower motor on, it will blow in cool vent to cabin and defrost (windshield only) it will not blow in Heat vent to cabin. I can hear/feel the blower motor working in the above situations but when I move the selector to hear the motor itself stops working. To me this sounds like an issue with the resistor pack for the blower motor, but before I go digging this thing out and attempt to locate one I wanted a second opinion. And the second portion of this question with the key off and out of the ignition are the fan controls supposed to stay active or do I have a surprise waiting for me somewhere in my wiring harness? Thanks in advance folks!

Probably, the vaccum canister has been removed, or is leaking, the controls all work on vaccum.

If all the air is coming out of your defrost no matter where the selector is located, then you either have a bad vacuum switch (common problem with a 1977 Factory AC car), or a vacuum leak somewhere in the system.

The controls work on cool vet to cabin and defrost, but not heat vent to cabin ( if that makes any sense). I also wear a hiss noise from the switch body when I move it to the heat section, this sounds like of confirms y'all's suspicions. Is there an Online PDF format or something similar for a FSM these cars? And by vacuum switch are you referring to this devise or the actual controller for the AC?

Probably the one behind the temperature control panel, they fall apart. I just bought a NOS replacement, I can find the part number, or someone else should have it.

I have a friend that restores old cars for a living, he suggested moving to a cable system similar to what he converted to in his mustang. Any thoughts on this, has it been done?

All depends on how much work you want to do, some guys have installed aftermarket heating & a/c, which use cables. The factory system is all vacuum operated.

So I got home this morning and feeling froggy decided to dive into my heater and odd electrical draw issues. This is what I found, amongst numerous spliced wires, a duct tapped together gauge cluster. I eventually became depressed and stopped, lol.
