Hey guys posting on behalf of a friend He bought a comet, i6, 200 Ci, a 1972, and he goes to bring it home and, "Oil" "Alt" and "brake" lights are on on his dash! It also wouldnt start, obviously. He checked the oil and it was at the bottom of the dipstick, so he put in some oil, and noticed there seemed to be a fair bit of oily sludge on the right side of his engine. Possible headgasket issues? He bought it sight unseen for 300$ after I told him it would be a decent deal, and hes as technologically inclined as a stick so, here I am ;p He basically just wants to be able to start it. How would he go about diagnosing this?
also when he goes to start it, it throws a "temp" light on the far left of the screen, I havent ven had a chance to look at it as he lives a few hours out of the city, but I figured you fine folk would know better than anyone! Also... Im lead to believe these carbs had an autochoke, is it possible his has a manual?
Do you get spark? Sound like there is a electrical issues with the warning lights, you can still have the possibility of no oil pressure. Did you try starter fluid? i would clean out the carb, change the oil, basic tune up and see what happens.
It sounds like the red warning lights you see are just the lights that come on normally when the key is turned to "on" - does it crank?
Yeah he said it cranks fine, like he hooked it up to his diesel since he thought the battery was just dead and he cranked er up and it would spin (thank god its not seized) but it wouldnt fire.
NO theyre just on with the key in the position right before he cranks, I believe he said they turn off when he cranks but the temp on is on when he turns it.
eh, sorry fo the triple post but it seems I spoke in error. the "Alt" light turns off when cranking and the "oil" light is no longer on but when he atempts to crank "temp" and "brake" stay on. HE says the guys said the brakes need to be bled, but what could cause it not to fire and throw the "temp" light while crnking? my money is on the carb not being set right..
@mav1970, any reccomendations on what to do in that case? The man he bought it from stated it was running fine then it got cold and it stopped starting. Obviously people can lie, but would that affect the spark at all? Im sorry for such cryptic information, just trying to help a brother out yknow?
Mine sat for years in a friend's back yard. My points weren't breaking so I took sandpaper to them and re gapped them then the car fired right up Or just throw in a new set of pints but look under the distributer cap first to determine what it is doing
Don't worry about the lights, they have nothing to do with the problem of the car not starting. It's an old car, they aren't that sophisticated...
And don't worry about the low oil on dipstick or the sludge for now - they also have nothing to do with it not stating
