Whatever it takes to get a 4R70 OD trans to fit up in there. I personally don't know, but I ASSume it's much larger than a C4. I do know my (relatively small) GM 200R4 OD needed some cutting at the top where the tunnel and firewall meet...

the easiest way to do the wiring/efi is to use an aftermarket fuel injection computer system. i would use the megasquirt 3 on that motor and trans. trying to make the factory stuff work will be a big headache.

A 4R70W should fit the tunnel of a '71, isn't really any larger than a AOD...

It's the butt ugly* 4.6 that doesn't have a chance in Hell of fitting unless the shock towers are cut out...

*Yes that's my opinion but I've owned five 2v 4.6, and I'd never consider one for a older Ford of any model...

hey, the crown vic was free got smashed in the rearend, and i just had the idea of putting that updated crown vic engine in the maverick with od tranny, another question will that tranny from 4.6 fit a 5.0?

Nope, the 4.6 from mid '92 used a unique modular only bolt pattern, early 4.6 with AOD did have the small block trans bolt pattern...

Another thing that would complicate this swap is the trans will have no way to mount a speedo cable, plus '05 was first year for DBW...

Well that's up to you but unless you have excellent fabricating and wiring skills, you'll soon be in over you head on this one...

Assuming they don't have a ton of miles, those engine/trans are desirable for replacement in another Crown Vic, Grand Marquis or maybe van/pickup...

Yeah you'd be far better off with a 5.0, width wise the 4.6 is is 1.5" wider than a 460, but there should not be any problem fitting a 4.6 in most trucks...
(No not in a early Econoline)

BTW AFAIK all 4.6 have a rear sump oil pan...
