Is this something I can buy at the auto parts store, or do I need to order from a mustang parts house?
You can get the busted bulb base out with some small needle nose pliers. I think Advance Auto parts had this socket in the "help" section. If all else fails, junkyard! The socket that is in the trunk is more likely to be in good shape.
I'm pretty sure they're available in auto parts stores. They should take a 194 bulb IIRC. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=50381&cc=1132096
I have new bulbs, but just cannot get the old bulb out. I think the contacts in the plug are getting messed up the more I work on them.
Look at a good socket, then drill a 1/16" to 1/8" hole between the contacts at base of bulb(not through just to bulb)... Insert a small pick and pry upward, should push bulb out... Reseal hole with RTV... May not work but socket isn't any good now, watcha ya got to loose???
put some dielectric grease on the new bulbs contacts. it will prevent corrosion from forming and thats usually what makes the bulbs hard to remove and help guarantee that they bulbs get full voltage.
Those bulbs are so hard to install it's scary. I always use a piece of hose to push and turn the bulb in case it explodes in my hand...
He's talking about the #194 wedge base bulb, they'll take far more abuse than you can imagine... Unless they are halogen(didn't exist in Maverick days), bulbs either have vacuum or filled with inert gas such as argon, no pressure, no exploding...
This one broke while I was flopping the wires all over while shortening and rerouting. When I got around to putting the bulb in and reinstalling, that is when I encountered the difficulty with pulling the old one out. Luckily did not occur in my hand.
Thanks for the Autokrafters idea...I really need new light housings AND bulb holders. My housings have all warped and no longer hold everything in like they should.
