Stalls easily without exhaust installed. Run better with it?

Even after it warms up, it wants to stall when I give it gas from a takeoff. I have to give it a little extra gas as I take my foot off the brake (using both feet) or it will stall on me. Then it peels out on takeoff.

Currently driving with open headers, and wondering if this will go away after I get full exhaust installed?

Timing is great, haven't messed with any carb settings since before I tore the suspension out. Idles nice and smooth.

Only other thing I can think is maybe the gas is too old? It is at least a year old, and been sitting without running for almost a year.

Also idling around 550 rpms. Maybe bump that up a hundred or so?

Dropped off for exhaust installation yesterday, hope to get it back today and see if it runs better...

It could be from the open headers breathing a lot better then a full exhaust and leaning out. Could also be old gas, idle does sound low but I'm no expert. I think most people set idle for 650-700 in gear and about 900-1000 in park, probably also depends on the cam for idle speed.

In the past, I have kept the idle at 550 in gear. So it lopes and rocks the car at red lights. I like when it does that!

I was thinking it was a lean out condition.

Muffler guy wants to keep it another night. Taking his time on it so it looks good.

If you have year old gas, you're lucky to have the car even start! I wouldn't adjust anything until you drain and refill with new gas (non alcohol, preferably) and drive at least 20mi or so to get all the old stuff run out of the system. :)

Once you have an exhaust system on it...The problem will I say "Most likely" go away. Free flowing open headers change the way the engine scavenges, affects vacuum signal at carb and current ignition timeing set up. You really should turn the idle up to around 700 in drive though. Could be gas is stale or there is a dead horse (Junk) in the carb from sitting. The ethanol in the fuel wreaks havoc with fuel systems. Especially in cars that sit for prolonged periods of time. See how it behaves once you have it back with exhaust on it.

you are leaned out with open exhaust, idle is a bit low, and just me personally, go with a different intake,

Would it make any difference whatsoever if the tank was full of Super?

That is all I run...just in case.

Does 92 octane last any longer?

Not sure, but I "may" have added Sta-bil into the tank before I stopped driving, assuming that I would not be driving again for a few months.

Im no chemist but I dont think the octane levels of a fuel has any bearing on how long it takes before it breaks down. I say flush it and Start it up with fresh fuel. May as well eliminate one thing at a time

Well, if fuel is the issue, then I refuse to drain a 3/4 tank as junk.

I will just drive the snot out of it until it is empty and top it back off with fresh.

If I get the car back tomorrow...might have a long trip to burn it off.

all gas starts to loose octane after about 6 mnths, i think after you get full exhaust on, re-set carb and timing, you should be good, and maybe change plugs

Gas that's a little stale won't likely cause hesitation, unless it smells rancid, I'd idle it up and drive it...

Running open headers usually requires at least three or four jet size increase, as already mentioned without back pressure scavenging, is far better...

Plugs are new. I wont touch any settings until I get exhaust on, and run a clean tank.

I spent WAY too much time tuning that carb to get it right, to go and screw it up on bad gas and no exhaust.
