Hey guys I am looking to install a set of 14 inch rims from a grabber with the dog dish caps and the trim rings on my 1969.5 maverick will these rims fit over my stock 1976 maverick disk brakes?
The disc brake rotor hub is larger diameter than a hub on a drum brake. So older wheels will not just bolt on. You can however take them to any machine shop and have the center machined out. It doesn't take much. IT cam be easily done in less than 30 minutes. I had a set of old Mustang GT wheels on my 77 that I had this done. Works great.
I was also wondering about this upgrade. Your wheels are exactly what I will be putting on my car this spring after I convert it to 5 lug. Can you give a little more detail on what you had done to make them fit the disc brake application? How about the wheels on your sprint, they seem to be different sizes front and rear. Did you do this upgrade to that one also. Sorry to hijack this post but its all about the same thing. Thanks ... Bob
I dont remember exactly how much was taken off because it was done about 9 years ago. All you need to do is take the rims and a rotor down to a machine shop. And tell them to turn the centers out to fit over the hubs. If you have a plasma cutter, you could cut them out yourself. It does not have to be precise because the lugs center the wheel, not the hub. The Sprint has after market reproductions. No mods needed.
Hey Mavthang, It is true that you can have the hub machined down. It's simple and cheap. I just did the same thing with a conversion for my Falcon. It cost me 20 bucks each and took about a half an hour. HOWEVER--for the guy who advised cutting your rim opening--DON'T DO IT!!!!!! While it is true that the lug bolts center the wheel, the center hole rides on the hub and gives the strength you need. If you cut out that lip your wheels will twist and collapse on you. And we all know what will happen at 65mph if a wheel decides to buckle!!!
