My dad just recently bought a 1973 Mercury Comet. We think it is a GT, but we haven't been able to completely confirm if it's a GT or not.

I have seen pictures/videos of people with a similar car without a hood scoop and also it seems like the grill on our's is blacked out? The VIN number for a Comet only lists a 2 door or 4 door and that's it (from what I have found).

Is there anything we can look for that can definitely tell us if we have a factory GT?

There's a picture of the car. It's definitely a 1973 Mercury Comet with a 302 V8, 3 speed manual on the floor. It has factory spots for speakers. The VIN number is listed as a 2 door 302 and was made in Michigan (I think, can't find the VIN right now).

You'd be best ordering a Marti report, it would tell you for sure, that car looks like it's had a lot of changes over the years. www.martiauto.com

The only way to confirm its a GT, is w/ the vin. At least, that's the only way I know. Once you have the vin you can get a Marti report, the basic report is/was $40.00 when I got mine.

I've found that VIN decoder. It says it only had 2 door and 4 door for the Comet models. I guess the production number will reveal more about the car. I'll just have to wait for the Marti report. :)

Comet GT's didn't have a unique vin like Grabbers, to indicate what they are.

No part of the Comet VIN will tell you if it's a GT, only a Marti report which of course requires a VIN...

That is what I was trying to convey. No vin -- No report.

I am thinking the grill was blacked out by someone not the factory or dealer..
For curiosity look closely at the body where the stripes would have been. It is not real easy to get rid of the stripes without just about sanding down to steel. The report will clarify it for sure but one can still look for some clues.

Only a Marti Report can confirm whether or not it's a GT, but some of the things that would certainly lead you in the right direction would be the black interior (minus the tan LDO seats), the hood scoop, does it have a passenger side mirror (sport mirrors), blacked-out tail panel, V8 most likely, floor shifter. These are the most common Comet GT Attributes, of course we know some came with 6 cylinders, and they could be ordered however, but I'd go out on a limb and say 90% of the GT's would have had the above-mentioned options.

What colour was the car originally? Is the door jamb sticker still legible? Post-up your PDF of your Marti-Report when you get it. We always like looking at the numbers!

if it does turn out to be a gt I would say your car is really rare with a manual. I dont know how many came with auto but I would say most of them came with auto

I got a Marti Report for my '73 Comet 2 Door that is a factory 302, 3 speed manual car.

It says out of the 55,707 Comet 2 doors built only 3,435 came with the 302/3 speed manual combo which comes out to just 6.17%. There isn't going to be anymore breakdown on the GT cars with the 302/3 speed combo because of them not having a specific VIN.

While Kevin may not be breaking down the numbers on std report as far as GT with manual, I'd think it could be done... All that would be necessary would be to search vehicles with code 1 trans(manual) & the GT option combined...

My guess the GT manuals would be higher percentage than std Comet, maybe as high as 10-12%, which would equal roughly 800 to 1000 cars...

I will be trying to get a Marti report to confirm it.

The back tail light section is blacked out, but not sure if somebody else has done it. Under the hood of the car is a light blue and the same under the trunk lid, so we think it was originally light blue. The black and some red is chipped over the blue. The dash is a dark blue and the back seat is also dark blue leather and is in really awesome condition. I think the head liner is blue but I can't remember exactly right now.

There is a good jack sticker under the trunk lid and 2 engine stickers under the hood (1 on the engine). The one on the door is rubbed off.

This might be a dumb question, but is the rear end factory posi traction or what? Also the car has dual exhaust.

Posi traction, is a GM term, traction lock is what Ford called them, and from the factory they didn't have that, or dual exhaust.
