My 250 is currently being rebuilt and it's time to choose a cam.Nothing special is being done to the motor, its being bored over .020,molly rings, and the head is getting a valve job with new seats and resurfaced, the block was also decked and the machinist said the compression is going to be close to stock.I have 2.79 gears and it is going in a four door. The car is probably oging to be a daily driver so I want it to have good fuel economy but at the same time have a little bit of power when I step on it.My machinist reommended this isky super cam what do you guys think of it? http://iskycams.com/timingchart.php?product_number=321255 http://www.iskycams.com/pdfcatalog/2004-05/page130.pdf 256/256, Lift .450/.450 Also What type of oil should I use on it for the break in? I need to go buy all parts required to fire it up so far this is what I got down Distributor,Petronix kit, coil,Plug Wires,SPark Plugs,Radiator hoses, coolant, water pump, thermostat (180 degrees?),fuel pump, fuel pump hoses, air cleaner, vaccum lines, and starter and alternator Is there anything that I forgot? And is there any upgrades available for the 250 as far as alternators and starters?I know that on a 302 you can upgrade the alternator to a 3g as well as the starter.
I would ask the builder if he has any recommendations for breaking in and lubricants. Might affect the warranty if any.. Don't forget the blue engine paint
I got the Old Ford Blue Cans ready as well Thanks for reminding me about the warranty that's one thing I haven't asked him about!
I thought I wrote 2.79 instead of 2.73 haha I must of missed that..And is it a lot of work to machine the head to fit a 2bbl?Would you recommend me doing this?I was planning on sticking with the 1bbl carter rbs.what other carburetors would work fine with my head? And would the tranny kickdown rod and throttle cable be an issue on a 2bbl? And if I was to install a 2barrel would this cam still work fine or would I want something better?
Does fuel economy go down the drain with a two barrel??as of right now my 302 gets 10 mpg average with a edelbrock 4 barrel..its so annoying i try not too drive it a lot
no.. not really if it's set up correctly for the motor. At least until you lean on the gas pedal harder.. and more often, anyways. The more you have.. the more you tend to use. Carb sizing has more to do with choosing the proper venturi size then it does with total airflow in most usage under WOT. Average torque is where it's at for most street motors. As mentioned above.. this motor really needs help in that department and that mod alone combined with a free flowing pipe/muffler will give you the greatest gains of all regardless of cam choice. Personally, with that dual purpose "economy/slight power boost" in mind, I would choose a cam with not much more than about 210'ish degrees(@.050) on the intake and about 215'ish exhaust. Should also be a split pattern design with heavier emphasis on exhaust lift/duration to help that anemic factory exhaust port out. That will help maintain better low-end throttle response and give excellent off idle torque needed to increase economy with such tall gears.
Maybe this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Clay-Smith-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a2636d545&vxp=mtr Or, check out Classic Inline. Rick
That is an extremely tame cam for a 250 and if you notice the lift figures are based on a 1.6 rocker ratio. The stock rockers are a 1.5 ratio which will lower the lift about .020...I would look at one of classic inlines 264 cams with a 110 or 112 lobe center.
So in your opinion what should I do?I don't mind spending the extra money if I will benefit from it.I just don't want to end up choosing the wrong cam or one that won't work right with what I got.
I would look at one of these cams from www.classicinlines.com http://classicinlines.com/proddetail.asp?prod=CSC-264-HSP-10 OR http://classicinlines.com/proddetail.asp?prod=CSC-264-HDP-10 Good luck with the build!
Options Options..Maybe I should just stick with what i got for now and maybe down the road beef it up, I got my 302 for my Grabber that I plan on rebuilding someday as well and I think thats probably where I would really be concerned with performance.....If i was to stick with my single barrel would the cam that I chose be good or would I be better of choosing one of the cams u mentioned above?Like I mentioned before I need a cam with good fuel economy but yet a little more power than stock.
