Ok, I adjusted my points tonight and adjusted my timing to 6* BTDC without the vacume lines on the distributor. Problem is, it's pinging like a pinball machine.

Have the points at .025 just like the owners manual calls for. Is there a possiblity that the timing mark is cast incorrectly on the ballancer? I know there were a few 2.8 v6s in rangers that got out with mis-cast ballancers. If not, what do you think my problem is?

My next step is to pull plug 1 and put something in the hole to feel TDC and check everything out.

i had similar problems...stupid question ... you using super? as i recall those 250 inlines from that era have a relatively high compression ratio. also maybe try some kind of engine cleaner... the kind that cleans up combustion chambers. that helped me a lot. all kinds of crap in there making the car ping. main thing is look at the plugs and get back to us with their color and condition. another stupid question...are you sure you got the vacuum lines hokked up to the distributor right? not swapped?
    best of luck

harry, did you have this problem before you did the points and setting the timing? i heard of a case of the outer ring on the balancer slipping. also the key on the crankshaft snout breaking. i think you are on the right track with the getting the #1 piston up and checking the balancer ...frank...:bananaman :bananaman L.T.N.G.

Another thing I heard not long ago is that with engines that have some miles on them, it is not unheard of to have to adjust the timing off spec a bit due to wear of internal parts. I do believe that there is some truth to this.
