is this where i should drill my 1/4 inch hole at for the new dip stick or woud i be better off just getting one already drilled. john
Also do not drill it till you have the new dipstick tube in-hand to verify that the diameter hole you're drilling is slightly less than the tube's diameter for a snug fit. I called it a 1/4" but it can be a few thousandths either way.
ok,baddad i will wait till i have the new chrome one thanks you guys for all the help P.S. with all this good advice this is going to be a piece of cake to get my maverick done by spring john
You can buy the chrome tube and dipstick assembly at most Advance Auto or Autozone's. Both have em on the rack in the chrome goodies section aisle. Probably at O'Reilly's too.
Double check the marking lines on your new stick. The best way is to get your car full w/filter and then put a mark @ that point to know when you are full or low on oil. Not all universal sticks marking are right for your car. Good Luck!
If you are running your alternator on that side, you might have to bend the tube around it slightly. Just mock it up at the same time so you don't have to re do it later and avoid some frustration. Cleaver
You gotta take the cover off to drill it... Just pick up one with the dipstick already in it... They made billions. You might want the manual fuel pump opening too.
im running a 91 block and along with dealing with the dip stick hole i also swapped on a 77 timing cover so i could use a mechanical fuel pump if you do use a manual pump dont forget to put the pump ecentric on the end of the cam while your in there
thanks guys i plan on using a electric fuel pump so i dont need the hole for a mechanical fuel pump. i will take my cover off and drill it have to take it off any how for new cam and double roller timing chain. john
Just make sure not to loose the two locating dowels for the timing cover. These make for a leak free front seal as they locate the timing cover, positively centering it around the crank snout. The earlier covers didn't have this feature and you had to use the crank damper to center the cover & seal, then tighten the cover bolts.
I have one of those covers, drilled the hole for the dipstick and opened up the passage way for the fuel pump too!
fastback86, so how did it work out for you drilling the new hole. i wont need to cut out for the fuel pump as i am going electric
I did it too, worked out great retained the reverse rotation waterpump and the serpentine belt too. I even knocked the hole out and put an mechanical Edelbrock fuel pump on it too.
