I have a completely stock 73 maverick 302 w/ column shift that runs great. Off the car I also have a high rise intake, hooker 6901's, a pair of 65 hipo heads that have been rebuilt and resurfaced, cable floor shifter kit, power steering drop down bracket and money for a good carb. Is the high rise too much for the motor? Do I really need the drop down bracket? What else am I missing to get this stuff on the car? Any suggestions would be awesome. -Ray
high rise intake is too broad of a description. we need to know the exact intake you have. you will need the drop down bracket if you install the headers. you will need intake gaskets, carb studs most likely. a new t-stat is a good idea when swapping an intake.
antifreeze...enough oil for (2) oil changes w/filters...radiator and heater hoses ...cam w/gear set...water pump...belts...new exhaust hook up...hammer...
Ditto on what Bryant said about the intake. Which one is it ? If it's a dual plane, it will work fine. If it's a single plane like a Vic Jr, it will not. Some of the older single planes are OK, such as the old Weiand X-cellerator with the twisted carb pad. When you say 65 Hi-Po heads, what are you specifically talking about ? If they're the genuine 289 Hi-Po's, then you need to sell em and buy a nice set of aluminum heads. The only thing different about the genuine 289 Hi-po heads were the screw in studs and cast in spring pockets, other than those two features, everything else was the same as the std 289 heads (ports and valve sizes) Then didn't provide more power, only better dependability at higher rpms. They're worth their weight in gold to a collector.
while some single planes are better than others as baddad already pointed out.. I wouldn't run one on a smaller displacement motor like these unless you have.. ample compression(you should be nearing 10/1 with those nipped heads).. and shorter gears to match the rpm oriented cam you've chosen for the combo.
yep.. that's the beauty of torque multiplication at work. PS. @Sidesho.. can you post a pic of your hood? Looks interesting.
