hello every body does any body know whats the difference betwen the 302 winsor and the regular 302 engine?
nothing. 302 is a 302. late model 5.0's went to a roller cam. that's it. there are changes by year. but mostly accessories.
....Unless it was a Boss 302. Completely different animal. Different heads, intake, pistons, rods, steel crank, 4 bolt mains, etc. I've personally only seen ONE real boss 302, and it was in a restored Boss Mustang. They're pretty rare & expensive.
Some folks and parts makers refer to all run of the mill small block Fords as "Windsors" because they are all in the same basic family 221-351w. There are some notable differences between them over the years and between displacements, however they are all basically the same design. The 352 engine that is commonly known as the 351w was labeled as such to avoid confusion in the late sixties when there were no less than THREE 352 cubic inch engines being serviced by Ford dealers. All TOTALLY different from the others. Then with the Boss 302 coming out in 69, folks started using the Windsor term for all small blocks. It is technically incorrect though, all small blocks, except the 352 in question, were built in Cleveland, Ohio... Not Windsor, Canada. However if you were to call a 302 "Cleveland", it would confuse things greatly as the 352 known as a Cleveland is nothing like a 302. Add to that the fact that the Boss 302 used Cleveland heads, and it gets worse. So, for practical purposes, 302w is something everyone can understand, even if it is not totally correct. Did I confuse you more? Dave
Wow! I didn't know all of that... I took it all at face value and assumed that all of our Windsor motors were made in Windsor... But, don't the roller 5.0s have different balancing or something, requiring different flexplates or some such thing(s) to mate them to our C4s?
And if you go international, there is a 302 "Cleveland", but it was only built in Australia, and is a destroked 351C. That's where the "Aussie" 2V heads come from - the Australian 302C, not the 351C. The Aussie 351 heads are the same as ours. Got to love Ford and all of their variants.
221-351 = "Windsor" series. 351C/351M/400M = "Cleveland" series. 352-428 = "FE" series. 429-460 = "385" series...
Yeah, I was trying to avoid the whole Pacific and Central/South America thing. The only reason Canada came into it was because the engine was made there, eh... Hey, just realized something I have never thought of... The Aussie engines are NOT Clevelands! Where were they made I wonder? Maybe they are 351 Queenslands??? 302 Brisbanes???
Nothing personal, but I read that and couldn't believe how much they got SO WRONG! Wow!!!! There is so much that I don't know where to start. I will just point out one glaring example: The 351w was in production until 1997. I have no idea why they say the Mod replaced it in 91. It also reads like the Cleveland outlived the Windsor. Poor syntax. Dave
351 Geelong? I think that's where they were cast IIRC. I just threw the Aussie stuff in to further confuse folks!:bananaman
Their syntax is screwy for some of it. They do say the 4.6 BEGAN to phase out the Windsors in 1991 - they don't say that it fully replaced them. And later on they say "The 351W was produced from 1969 to 1997. It was installed in everything from Mustangs to the full-size cars, and all the way up to the F350. It has been one of Ford's most successful engines."
