I remember when Cleveland was king... Nowadays though the Windsor is where it's at. There is just soooooo much available out there now to beef them up. They owe it all to the popularity of the 5.0 Mustang, and to a lesser extent the good ole 289-302. So much interchanges and so many 5.0 guys upsized to the 351 that they are tied together and way mainstream. A stock 351w that is modded up can get close to 500 hp. Once you get into heads, cranks, rods, and even blocks, the sky is the limit... and you can make the power without being too radical for the street. Dave
The 351w was NEVER intended as a performance engine. Ford developed it and the 300 I6 as it's 'future' powerplants for trucks and low line family cars in the late 60s. The plan for the 70s and beyond was that these engines were to replace the workhorse FEs derived from the 352. The W displaces 352 cid, but Ford called it 351 to keep from confusing people. It grew up in the shadow of the Cleveland (and related engines). The 351c was planned for great expansion as a performance engine as well as a high line workhorse. 351c was the baby performance engine, while the planned 400 was the top truck and Mercury type engine, and 427 plus Clevelands were planned for the muscle types. Anyway... The top 351w engine was flywheel rated at 290hp for 69. The bulk though are low rated because the muscle crash of the time. The W has large main bearings (not good for high rpms) and mediocre stock heads. So it was a long time before this engine took off in performance apps. Thanks, again, to the 5.0 Stang. Dave
My mustang makes 308 RWHP and 346 RWTQ that's 362 Hp and 407 Tq at the flywheel it's a 351w, edel rpm heads, .060 hypertectic pistons, retro roller cam .533 lift 234 dur, stealth intake, holley 600, roller rockers, shorty headers 2 5/8" primary 3" collector 2 1/2 exhaust, flowmasters, stock distributor, MSD 6 ingnition box, stock crank, and stock rods nothing really special.
Well...using windsor "based" blocks (aftermarket), heads, intakes, etc and a big turbo (e.g. Pro 5.0 cars) 2000 HP can be had. Saw a guy not too long ago that had a '90 mustang hatch that dyno'd 2400 with 410 cubes. Not too shabby! With a stock block and good internals, heads, etc...I wouldn't go more than 700 HP. The block tends to get weak at that power level. It ain't hard to make excellent power, though...these engines are great foundations for good streetable HP/Torque. That, and they make stroker kits that can make a Windsor up to 426" with a stock block. Aftermarket blocks with 4.125" bore can go nearly 470"!!
I was planning on getting 408w one day hopefully before spring or summer. what gears would be best for every day driving + be decent fast in 1/4? about what would I run?
Matt that all depends on how much hp you got how much torque ya got , what tranny you got , what gears ya got , how much traction ya got , how much you weigh , how much the car wieghs , ect.
well... thats why i asked about gears. Dunno the stardard HP for 408 or about what it pushes. Tranny i don't want to brake so c4 i'm guessing. don't want to run 4grand at 60 65mph as for the weight to you i'm "stick boy"
. That depends on the heads , compresion, headers , intake , carb , and cam. You`ll prolly need a C6 .
