any one know what easy bolt in 4 speed is for my 74 comet gt that has a factory 3 speed on the floor with factory matching # 302 engine??
I'm pretty sure a short tail shaft top loader 4 speed will swap right out with your 3 speed. Not sure if the driveshaft splines are the same but that's a quick fix too
Small block Toploader 4 speed with a Mav/Stang tailhousing. The driveshaft splines are the same, it should be a direct bolt in. Just make sure it's not an FE big block 390 unit. Those have a shorter input that does not reach into the pilot bearing when used with a small block bellhousing.
I have a long tail shaft 4 speed Top Loader that was original to my Cleveland in my Gran Torino. Can I change it to a short tail trans
What are you calling "long" ? Toploaders came in two tailshaft lengths, one is 24" overall, the other 27" They use different driveshaft lengths.
There was also a 3rd Toploader 4 speed used with the Sunbeam Tiger, its length was in between at approx. 25 1/4". Also, you can use a big block toploader with the shorter pilot ended/input shaft behind a small block, you just have to purchase a "stepped" pilot bearing, which basically makes up for the difference in length. I have a wide ratio 390 Toploader behind my 289 with the stepped pilot bearing.
