ok so i'm gonna be getting a used running 302 n decent condition soon, and i wanna know if it's possible to get 400 hp from it naturally aspirated no nos...and if so, how would i do it. i want to turn my maverick into a street/strip car...also...i want to keep it under 6k rpm...thats why i'm not sure if it can do it or not....how much can you get from a 347 stroker?

It won't be very streetable if you can, I think 7,000RPM you could do it!
Cylinder heads and a good intake with a large cam will get you there but stock rods would be the weak link for sure!

With the right heads and cam it's easily done. Something like AFR185's or the Jegs "Kasse" heads and as little as the factory HO cam it's been done before.

Use a power adder it a lot cheaper, and streetable too.

Concentrate on getting the air in and out of the motor. i.e. - cam, heads, intake, exhaust It's all basic. I wouldn't worry about the rods, especially if you are going with a 347. Usually a 347 kit will come with upgraded rods (mine are forged h-beams). The weak link in a 347 or a 302 for that matter is the block. They tend to split down the middle. You could consider going to the 351w and stroking it as it's just as cheap to do (once you get over the initial investment of purchasing the 351). You get the stronger block, but then you have header and spark plug fitment issues. Basically you are starting with a great light car and a motor platform that will give you tons of flexibility with what you want to build. If I can give you one piece of advice...before you start, plan your goal and what you want to spend...then stick with that plan. I don't know how many times I've started a project and then changed it part way through and had to change parts I'd already bought to match it. Good luck and happy racing!

youll be alot happier with a motor making alot of lowend tq than a sb making 400 hp at 10,000 rpm lol.

The Kaase heads would be a poor choice for a 302 under 6000 rpm. Way to big.

Tammy's car makes 345 with a mild built motor. I don't think 400 would be that hard.

I don't recall the dyno specs on the Carcraft Kasse head experiment but it wasn't neccessary to spin it to 10 grand:hmmm: to make it. Neither was it necessary to go over 6500 as I DO recall they used a stock roller shortblock with stock internals. The stock roller lifters start bouncing off the cam at 6000-6500. Same thing was done with AFR heads. ;)

"400 HP With A Stock Cam! (5.0) Totally Naturally Aspirated, And The Only Things We'll Change Are The Heads, Headers, And Rocker Arms"

    Read ARTICLE.

Of course it doesn't end there - you have to have the right stuff to run a 400 horse engine. Weak links are; tranny, small U-joints, stock rear end. You'd want sub frame connectors, drive shaft loop, 5 Pt Harness, and a roll bar would be necessary at the track, and sticky tires to get traction.

But yes, you can get 400 horses out of a 302. :D
