First time I have a tach in this car that I commute with and at 70mph I'm almost 4K RPM on the freeway. I usually go 75 and I'm almost 4200 at that speed. Have a stock 302 with I'm pretty sure is a stock rear end with a stock C4. Car doesn't have any major problems I'm aware of. Only thing it's always done it shifts hard into 2nd gear and kinda winds up hard before going into 2nd.

The rpm seems right with the mph if you have a 3.25 gear ratio with small diameter tires.

Mine was around 3500 for 60mph. Not exactly built for speed were they?

the problem is the 3 speeds transmissions, thats the problem. you need and AOD or a 5 speed.

Tach is set for 8cyl. Idles at 900-1000, shoots to 4000 at 60+mph.

    I just ran the calculations

    70 mph
    1:1 transmission ratio
    3.00:1 rear end ratio
    26" tall tire
    = 2713 RPM

These modifications will not affect the RPM... unless you transmission is slipping now from the extra power.

I haven't driven my Maverick in about a month and a half, but it seems like it always stayed around 3,000 at 75 mph.. That's with a 2.79 gear.

I can guarantee my car is bone stock and the rpms are too high for my taste when cruising the highway. My F150 is 3000rpm at 55mph.

I have no idea how to measure or determine the gearing. VIN could help? ID tag?

Put a jack stand under one side of the axle so one wheel is off the ground, one wheel on. Put the transmission in neutral. Crawl under the car and put a chalk mark on the driveshaft. Have a buddy turn the raised wheel exactly one revolution while you count the drive shaft revolutions. Divide the count by two and you have the rear end ratio.
