Since I was about 10 years old, I have had a passion for a few cars that are owned by my family. My grandpa has a barn in NW Ohio with 2 60's Mustang Convertibles, a 1969 Pontiac Firebird (dad's) and a Ford Maverick, which I have been told is a 1972. I was told early on that the only car in that barn I would ever have a chance at owning is my mom's Maverick. For the past few years, since I was a senior in high school, I have been toying with the idea of getting the Mav from my mom and working on it to get it back in running condition. (It hasn't been started in the 22 years that I have been alive). I have done some research but have never found another Maverick that had the half vinyl top that it has. That is, until today when I was looking through the Maverick/Comet picture Gallery. There are a few Mavericks with the same style roof, but they are all 77's. So I don't know if my mom doesn't know the correct year of her car, or if the 72 came with the vinyl and not many people have them. http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/showimage.php?i=345&c=6 This is a picture of a car on this site that has the top that I am referring too as being half vinyl.
Could have been dealer installed, back then they did stuff like that. The 72 sales brochure doesn't show anything like that available.
Ok, I didn't think of that being the case. I may just have to write down the VIN next time I am at my grandparent and look it up in a registry.
Mine has that style top and it is a 77. I have seen it on a 76 mav also. I have heard it called a 3/4 vinyl top. I have also seen the same style top on a 73 plymoth duster.
It is really confusing, because after talking with my dad, he said it has the smaller bumper like the ones found on the '72, but it has the top that I haven't seen on any besides the '77 and supposedly the '76 as well. I suppose (since they bought it used) that the bumper could have been switched out, but that would still have been in the 80's when it was done. I don't have any access to the car until Thanksgiving though when I will visit my grandparents, so I can't get the VIN until then.
