Is it possible that my 73 Comet (all orig. with a #'s matching 302/C4) could have come standard with a limited slip rear end???...I believe the rear end gears are 273's
Mavericks and Comets were NEVER available with anything but open diffs 69-77. 2.79 and 3.00 were the only gears available when equipped with an 8". It has been a long, long time since the car was new though, so a previous owner had plenty of time to install anything you can imagine.
put it in gear, raise up the rear end and turn one of the tires. If they turn the same way then you have a LS if they turn opposite ways then you have an open. unless you want an all out performance car you dont need one, an open diff is perfect for cruising.IMO
Thanks for the info guys, and yes I'm sure your right about the 279 gearing.... Does anyone know of an interchangeable 8" rear end I could use that would have a limited slip and some gearing I could squeal the tires with?(at least mid 3's)http://mmb.maverick.to/images/smilies/huh.gif
the mustang II's,bobcats and pintos also came with 8"s and some had track lok's but they are extremely hard to find, i've been looking for 4 years with no luck. this link might help you out http://www.mustangii.org/decoder/axle/
The whole center sections with what ever gear you want already installed are usually ebay. Not cheap though.
