I have a 76 Stallion 9" with trac-loc rear axle, but it doesn't have a tag on it. Does anyone have an idea what the gear ratio in to is?
if it came out of a stallion its probably a 8'' 3.00 or 2.79. i think thats the only axle/ratios you could get in '76
If the axle is out of the car... Just mark a flange/drum, then turn the pinion as many times as it takes to get the mark to go 360*. Count the complete turns of the pinion until the mark goes all the way around to where it started. If the pinion turns about 2 3/4 turns, or 2.75... then you have a 2.79:1 ratio. Assuming it is an 8" rear of course, as no Mav ever came with a 9". If the pinion turns 3 turns, then you have the 3.00:1 ratio version of a Maverick rear. If the tag is gone, and especially if the rear is a 9", then you may find something different. 3 1/2 turns = 3.50:1 gear 9" (Possible 3.40 8" or 3.55 8") 4 1/8 turns = 4.11:1 gear, available 8" or 9". The list goes on and on... there are so many ratios it's crazy.
those are the only ratio's that you could get PERIOD. axle code 3 for 2.79:1 and axle code 6 for 3.00:1, unless it's a '70 with a 7.5 which they had a few different gear setups
Easiest way to tell a 9" vs and 8" is that you can use a socket on all the nuts around the pumkin. A 9" has the lower two nuts shielded by the pinion and you have to use an open end wrench to loosen them. In counting gear ratios by turning the pinion vs how many times an axle turns, you will get a more accurate count if you figure out how many pinion turns it takes to make the axles turn 10 times and then divide. (i.e. "almost" 28 pinion turns would equal a 2.79, 35.5 turns equals 3.55)
