Well, not to start another 8.8 thread but I was wondering who has done the swap and what car did the rear end come out of. I'm contemplating using one that I've got. Its 5lug with discs. The discs dont excite me much but finding gears will be easier.

Are you kidding? Try Summit, Jegs, Randy's Ring & Pinion, DTS and any other source of rear end parts.

Well, when you hang around 5.0 mustang guys it is. Seeing as I've already got some 3.73's and a posi that right there would make it cheaper already

There are plenty of gear choices for an 8" for sure, but the posi choices are sure limited. The 8.8 looks like it would be a royal pain to do a gear swap on but the limited slip units are a dime a dozen it would seem.

Actually the 8.8 gear swap isn't all that hard. IT's just easier to pull the entire rear out of the car and do it without having to lay on your back, that's all. At least with a 8" or 9" you just change the center sections. I've done 2 gear swaps on 8.8...both on my truck, and done it several times on my old Mustang...under the car. Ain't exactly fun, but definetly do-able. If you get Motorsport gears, the original shims can usually be reused. I got used gears from a wrecked Mazda Navajo, got posi center (good one...31 spline 7/8" pin and the HD clutch kit) for my truck...got the shims and all from the Mazda, and it bolted right in. Not a single noise, clunk, nothing....like I said, bolted right in.

Got the whole center section with 3.73 gears for $40.

Personally, the 2 I did I found it easier to pull the whole rear out and set it on some jack stands. Choices being what they are, I"ll take the 8 over the 8.8. Especially if your thinking you might be working on it more than just the initial set up. JMO
