I have a 9" rear end out of a 60 Edsel with a housing measurement of 52" from flange to flange. Should work nicely in a 76 Maverick. There are no backing plates on the 9". Can I swap-in the backing plates and drum brakes off the current 8" to the 9"? Are the 8" componets compatible with the 9" rear end in terms of interchangeability? The axles are 28 spline on both.

    Apperciate your support.

I agree you can use your 8 inch backing plates as long as the 9 is small bearing

8" and 9" use the same axles

You'd have to cut off the big bearing tube ends and install small bearing 9" tube ends.
Cutting the ends off your 8" would be the same result assuming the 8" is a 5 lug.
Big 8" bearing ends are identical to small 9" bearing ends. You'd have to take the big bearings themselves off the axles at that point, and install small bearings there too.
