I originally posted this incorrectly so please allow me to try again . . . . .

I am looking for a gear set for an 8" rearend. I currently have 2.79's in my car and would like to swap out to something in the range of 3.0 to 3.55.

I have been told to go to my local junk yard BUT here in Mass all the old stock cars have long since been crushed. Almost all of the cars in the bone yards are 90s or newer.

You will not see much difference between a 2.79 and a 3.00 - it would just be a waste of time to do that swap. (JMHO) - But a 3.55 is a great selection to wake up a street car.

My suggestion, is to buy a new ring and pinion set from a place like Summit. They have them for $160. The nice thing about the 8" is you can pull the center chunk and take it into a driveline shop. They will correctly install your new gears and then you just drop it back into the car and your done.

Here is a Summit ad from ebay for a 3.55 set.

I should add too, that you may need to swap the gear for the speedometer drive to keep the speedo accurate. That takes 2 minutes - the gears are all color coded.

I should mention that the speedo is currently not hooked up. I guess I should think about doing that at some point. :)

3.25 is a good street gear if you drive the interstates. Tire size has a lot to do with the final ratio.
