Well... before this car I've never really worked on one to this extent. I found a 250 straight six(I was mistaken, whats in mine is the 200). But the 250 is $200 and the guy had rebulit it and he bench tested it in front of me so I know it's a good engine. And he has a 9 inch rear end that he wants $50 for. the problem Im having is that he says it's not a posi... but I thought that all of them had posi....

SO, riddle me this batman... how do I know if it's a 9in rear end VS 8in or anything else? and do 9in rears come without posi?

then how hard is it to pull my engine, then drop in the new one?

    Thanks......

easiest way is if you cannot get a socket on the 2 bottom nuts it is a 9", as compared to an 8". and most 9" and 8" rears are not posi. the worth of a 9" depends on the width. almost any 9" is worth $50 just for the center section. if it is too wide for the maverick it has to be narrowed and that is what costs the most.:)

the guy who is selling it said that it was pulled from a 72 2-door Mav... and a friend who used to play with alot of fords said that there is barely a difference between 72 and 74 and thinks it should just bolt right up theoreticly even using my stock drive shaft.... GOD I HOPE SO

If it was the 1972 factory rear it is an 8". Mavericks never came with a 9" - and yes it will bolt right in driveshaft and all.

    :)

was wrong.... wasnt just a regular mav.... he says it was a grabber, and that it's an early 60's rear, so God willing its what I think it is

Grabbers and Comet GTs were nothing more than a cosmetic option. Nothing high performance was ever installed from the factory. 8" rears were also made in the 60's although mid 60's is when they were started. Here is a picture to compare. You will see how the pinion on the 9" hangs lower than the 8. which is why you cannot use a socket on the bottom 2 nuts. Also notice how the 8" is flatter across the top and bottom.

Mavaholic, thanks for the pic. It helps to see them side-by-side. I will keep an eye out for an "8-inch with a curved top" from now on...I think that is the easiest way to quickly tell them apart...
