Hey everyone, i just pulled my comet out of storage for the winter last weekend, and i realised my head gasket is leaking, since i am taking the heads out to replace the gaskets i am going to change the heads as well, i was wondering what would be my best bet for heads. my comet has a 302, with a few mods to it, (intake, card, cam, pistons, stall) anyway any advice would be greatly appreciated... thx
depends on how much you want to spend.. you can have your heads reworked for the cheapest way or you can go and buy some aluminum heads the question is.. what do you want your car to do? do you want power? are you going to race it? every day driver?
The other option that Simon didn't add was the later model E7 heads. Those are plentiful in wrecking yards and on the internet and flow better than the older heads. Kind of a middle ground between aluminum and stock.
I would go with a set of WORLD cast iron roush 200 heads. They are cheap and should bump up your performance quite a bit. Here are the specs on them. 200cc intake 64cc combustion chambers 2.02/1.600" valves 1.250" springs (100# seat/.560" max lift) 3/8" studs The best part is that they are only $469.99 in jegs.
The jegs book says its for the pair. Just checked the web site and it said that was each. It must be a misprint in the book. Someone should make them own up to the price.
E7s aren't worth the effort. If you can find some GT40 heads from an Explorer or something, that would be an improvement. You didn't state cam profile, whether you were running exhaust manifolds or headers, and other stuff, which helps people give you advice. You can also find used sets of Edelbrock Performers etc on ebay.
I don't see much wrong with the E7's, considering all 70's castings going to be worn out and need lots of money to make good again. I have a set on mine, I lightly ported the exhaust, and put them on a stock 86 Bird short block, so far runs low 9's (1/8) stock converter, 3.00 gears, has more in it, chasing some tuning problems. Will be easy 8's when traction/tune comes together.
How much because the GT40 are in the range of 62cc or 64cc I think. So it would also drop compression. Would the smaller runners & valves on the GT40's give better throttle response for driving on the street?
Many 70s 302 heads were 67-68CC, so your drop in compression would be relative. I never recommend heads with 2.02 heads unless you are building the whole motor and can source pistons that will work with them.
They can be milled to 58cc nice heads for the money. I'm to lazy to read what his current combo is but a set wolrd jrs might be better.......
