hey everyone i have a carter afb 600cmf 4 barrel carb im having trouble tunning it. im having trouble with starting my car. its a 302 v8 and i was told that when carb is perfedctly tuned it starts at the turn of the key. mine takes bout 5 to 7 seconds to start. if i turn it off then right back on it will start right up but if i turn it off and let it sit for bout 2 minutes then it takes bout 5 seconds after i turn key to start. and i dont have any gauges so is there any specific number of turns on each screw??? help anyone...
the float level could be off. you would need to take the top off of the carb and check it. the choke could not be set right. the idle mixture may not be right. do you pump the gas once before you crank it?
how can i check the float level to make sure? and its got a manual choke so its always open. no, i never pump the gas before turning it on. should i pump it once before crnking it?
There's more to it than just tuning the carb. The ignition plays a HUGE part. If the ignition isn't up to snuff, no amount of fiddling with the carb will help it. Ditto on the ignition timing, that has to be right too. If you have a points ignition, that's the first place to start looking, or replacing it, that would be my first upgrade, getting rid of the points and replacing with a drop in electronic module. Next is the timing setting, for a Ford V8, 12*BTC is where to start, the factory setting is retarded, litterally. Once you've done these two things, then decide whether or not the carb needs adjusting.
I think we just need old schooling here, unlike FI you need to press gas pedal at least once to floor. That primes engine with gas. Fixing the choke will help also. Give that a try and see if it starts right up!
I see your n TX now that I'm not on phone. I never ran a choke in my 69 Mach 1 while at Ft Hood in the 70's. If it was me, I would put the cable on, but don't think it would get used
That's probably true in his case, but with the right combo of cam & ignition, and carb, it can be started exactly like an efi motor, even in 25*F weather even without a choke.
I`m always up to new learning, what do you have to do to start carb engine (not hot) without pumping throttle?
ya thats called being too rich. to start a motor requires more fuel than it takes to keep it running. also it requires more fuel to start a motor at lower temps. if your motor starts with no choke, no pump of the throttle at 25*f then its idle mixture is really rich.
i think you guys arent understanding me. the car starts right uop in the morning after its been sitting over night. the problem is once i run it and i turn it off. if i come back 5 minutes later and try turning it on thats when it cranks for bout 5 to 10 seconds before it starts. then it throws smoke. but it only throws smoke when it cranks for 5 to 10 seconds before starting. it doesnt throw smoke in the morning when it starts right up
