Sorry if this question is stupid but its my first car, and i dont have a dad to ask, well i have a 73 mav, and it takes a while to start it, but after i let it warm up, ill reverse it then put it in drive and it will die, but if i just start out in drive it works fine...is this an alternator problem cause when it shuts down the alternator sign comes on. thanx
It is normal for the alternator light to come on when the engine dies. You need to figure out why the engine dies. Does the engine run rough before putting it into gear? Has this car sat for a long time? Just some questions to help get the diagnoses going.
Tap the gas pedal softly before you put it in gear. If it is on the high idle it will bang into reverse and die. Slow the motor down by pressing it just above idle and let it off quick. Let the idle smooth outthen shift it into reverse. 1973 has a "curb idle solenoid" that raises the idle as long as the key is on. It may not be adjusted correctly or it may be the high idle circuit on the choke. try pressing the gas pedal to see if that works - just press it and let it up - let the idle smooth and then put it in reverse. Well the Guy that had it before me had no problems just needed a new carb kit, it hasnt sat for a long time, and it doesnt seem to run rough when i switch gears. well i droped it off at the auto body shop, to get a paint job on it. when i get it back ill put a new carb kit on it. should i get a tune up or what? cause i dont want to waste any money casue thats one thing im sort on. thanx
Well i talked to the guy that owned before me, he said that he just had a tune up on it..so is it the Carborater?...im going to buy a carb kit for it.. i hope that does it.
