i recently replaced my 302 in my 72 grabber with a 67 289 i reused the c-4 that came out of my maverick except i used a different convertor ,i drained all the old fluid out and had a local tranny shop flush the convertor out! convertor was used slightly but was suppose to be ok! tranny shifted fine before i pulled it out with the old engine, i now have it bolted up to the 289 and when i got the engine started the tranny will not take any gear, i orginally put 1 qt fluid in convertor and 3 in the pan ,i didnt add any more to it the 1st start of the engine cause i was just trying to see how the engine was gonna run car was never taken out of park until i added 6 more qts and had the rear tires jacked up off the ground, it still wouldnt take gear and i added another qt now it has 11 qts of fluid and still takes no gear i took the tranny lines loose at the radiator and fluid has been pumped up to the lines so does this mean my pump is working?i didnt do it while running but the lines were all dry and clean before i installed them ,i flush them also,i do have a pretty large tranny cooler ,maybe im not reading the dip stick correctly but 11 qts seems like alot i also have b&m shifter and i have checked to make sure its hooked up correctly and working correctly im pretty sure i got the convertor all the way in with three clicks,,JUST WONDERING WHAT I DID WRONG
yes its hooked up 72comet . but even if i wasnt wouldnt i bee able manual shift thru the gears, there is no reverse or forward gears
If it isn't going into any gear, that sort of narrows down the possibilities. The one big change is the converter. What did the converter come out of? If it isn't fully engaged with the pump, the tranny won't shift into any gear. How much pressure is in the cooler line? I would also check your shift linkage. Did you have the valve body out of the transmission?
What did the convertor come out of? There are 2 different splines for a C4 24 spline and 26 spline. The notches in convertor run the pump, but the splines run the internals. wrong splines is possible.
my tranny is a 1972 c-4 , the convertor im not sure what it came out of as it was out when i bought it but its the big 11 3/4 bolt pattern same as my stall that came out of my tranny,it was about a 2200-2400 stall and i went back with stock rear gears and stock 289 so thats why i went with the bigger stock convertor the linkage is funtioning at least externally not sure whats going on internally, the pan was dropped and a new filter screen replaced. no mods to the valve body were done. i will unhook a tranny line while running to see if it has a strong flow or not .is that gonna determine if the pump is working i do know while the eninge is off and cooled down the fluid level drops pn the check stick but rises a little higher than full with bubbles in it now i think that means to much fluid correct?
also i thought the bigger bolt pattern were later c-4,s with the 26 spline or did they make a early 24 spline convertor as well,if thi sis a 24 slpine i have in there has it damged my tranny?
ok i just wnet out and unhooked a tranny line at the radiator and i placed a drain pan under it to catch fluid, went inside started car and its gushing fluid out looks like its pumping fluid really well
I think the smaller c4 only holds about 7 qts,not sure about the pan fill.I`ve seen ads for racing c4s & some send trans fluid with them & it is 2 gal. of red line.
ok i have let my car idle for a while an di have made sure the tranny fluid is topped off! i have shifted thru all the gaers several times and still doesnt take forward or reverse gear , now i will say this!it had been a few months ago since i removed the tranny when i pulled the old engine out and i do remember the fluid looking real dark! but it shifted fine .do you guys think my tranny was on the verge of going out ?someone said that dark fluid means burnt clutches
Fluid darkens with age and useage, if it didn't look like old motor oil, likely internal condition is still OK... A dry small bell C4 requires 9qt... The flats that are on converter snout operate pump, if there is a problem with inner shaft it isn't going to engage any gear...
krazy comet thanks for your help along with everyone else thanks!! i talked today with a local tranny shop and from what info i gave them they tol dme i probably have the wrong convertor, which i know most of u had said so,i was just hoping for something minor that didnt requir eme pulling it back out,he said the outer operates the pump and since my pump is working he seems to think i might have the 24 spline inner shaft which would not allow the hears to engage, stupid me didnt check that befor ei installed i just assumed i had a 26 spline,i will update when i find out my problem
finally got the tranny back out of the maverick! it was the wrong spline convertor, my tranny is 26 and this convertor is 24 spline,my stupid mistake for not checking before installing ,thanks to eberyone who helped me out,and for those who said it might be the wrong spline convertor thanks you were right
