So I've read everything on here the search pulled up and still have some questions. I am using the compressor that goes down the center of the coil and has 2 hooks at either end. I welded a nut onto the end to prevent issues with running into the upper control arm. So dumb question but in trying to slide this thing down the center of the spring I'm having issues with getting the hooks onto the spring. I took off a hook at each end, slid it down, and then reattached the hooks where I wanted them but as I started to crank on it, it didn't appear to be compressing anything. Any suggestions?
And it will un-compress VERY fast if the compressor slips! Be VERY VERY CAREFUL when you pull it out and when you put it back in! Don't ask me how I know........but just let me say if the compressor slips off, the spring will move FAST ! Been there, done that!
Here ya go: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/27035-Internal-Coil-Spring-Compressor/dp/B003A18KCQ"]Amazon.com: OEM 27035 Internal Coil Spring Compressor.: Home Improvement[/ame]
The OEM compressor was a long bar with a ACME thread that seated on top of the shock tower with a bearing plate. It about the slickest set-up and you can swap springs easily with a 1/2" ratchet. I was fortunate to buy a complete kit from a dealer many years ago for $25. Has all the adapter plates for any shock tower Ford from a '62 Fairlane on up. Too bad the aftermarket has not made an equivalent tool. You would think with the large Mustang population, there would be a captive market for one.
Thanks guys. Auto zone out here wanted a $50 deposit last time I rented anything from them. By ordering the one from Amazon.com I paid $55.95 + about $7 shipping. After filling out there credit card app. I also get a $30 rebate. Total cost about $33 and I don't have to go to town and get it each time I need it.
