my neighbor is willing to bet me a thousand bucks that in the early 70s' it was possible to order a mav with a 289...either 1971 or 72. i say no way. all i need is some documentation... that 1000 bucks will go a long way with my 1970. anybody know for sure?

You couldn't get anything with a 289 in it in 1971 or 1972...let alone a Maverick.

I have run across people that SWEAR that they had a Mav/Comet with a factory 289. Plain and simple, last year for 289 was 1968.

Bet him...it'll be an easy thousand bucks for you. Ford quit making 289s in 1968...before Mavericks existed. Ther would have been no point in ordering a Maverick or '68-up Mustang with a 289 as opposed to a 302, as the 302 was more powerful (the high compression 289s were '65-'66). There are people who think their early to mid '70s Mavericks and other Fords came with 302 BOSS engines, when in fact the BOSS was only made in '69 & '70. It's just ignorance, but they're co convinced that they will bet you a million dollars that they're right. They've heard the terms "302" and "BOSS" used together so they think that all 302s are of the BOSS variety because they are Ford illiterate...

Should be easy to prove by referencing many service books and factory brochures. Remember he made the statment so he has to prove he is right. The engines look nearly identical to the untrained eye. One of the places there are differences is the intake/ head combinations. If one looks closely at engines in the Mustangs, Falcons and other Ford cars, when at cruises, you will see some with the front of head to manifold that line up ,others that don't. First intake manifold bolt is exposed and those that are not. Doesn't mean much except that it shows that there were different part versions that are interchangable.
No way to prove it but the factory could have had some 289 engines left somewhere and put them in, in the first year of the V8 in the Mavs. just to get rid of them and this is what he remembers and thinks could be ordered in error.

Get a 71 Dealer brochure. Their on Ebay all the time. Only V8 option is a 302. For enough $$$$ you could probably get anything you want, but he will not find any documentation to prove it was done. Did you put a time limit on this bet? If you win, are you going to split it with all of us that helped to prove your point?

I doubt that Ford put any leftover '67 289s into late '71 Mavericks. The V-8 wasn't even an option for Mavericks until late '71/early '72... The Comet got them first in '71...

My '70 Grabber came with the first 460 c.i. 4bbl - serial number 001. It was a special proto-type. Only 501 made (enough to qualify as 'production'.

First ever American car to do the 0-100-0mph in 10 seconds.

A dead give-away is the four-link suspension and 13" Baer brakes - only offered with the 460's.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

    ;)

Oh yes I have a brother in law who has told me many times about the 1974 comet GT That he had in thelate `70`s/early `80`s with a
"Factory 4bl 351 windsor and factory 4 speed with a factory positive traction rear end." That was the fastest car around his town until he got drunk and rolled it!
